Hello,

I am loosing coolant and after putting the system under pressure and not seeing any leaks, decided to change the thermostat. My question is how to refill the system, should there not be a valve to let the air out upon refilling???

Thanks, hope my water consumption will be resolved....

when filled with coolant leave the expansion cap off start the engine and let it get warm and any air in the system will be expelled through the expansion tank, make sure the heater is on hot so as to bleed the heater matrix as well.

Have you checked the condition of the seal on the expansion bottle? it's been the cause of a few problems and coolant loss for other members!

when refilling the system, top up the level in the expansion bottle and run the engine till it gets warm and the stat opens, then increase the revs slightly to force the coolant round and blow out any trapped air! keep both heaters on hot so the coolant can flow freely through the matrix's, switch off and let it cool down, if the level in the bottle drops? top up to the correct level and repat the proccess, keep an eye on it for a few days to make sure it doesnt drop to low!

thanks for the replies, I already changed the cap on the expansion bottle but that was not the problem. Now I have finnished changing the thermostat and will try the galaxy out on the motorway to check if I m still loosing coolant or not.

How much are you loosing and over what time frame? any funny smells in the cabin when you first run the heaters?

still not loosing any coolant but that might bu because I have not been on the motorway for long enough or that my new thermostat is doing the job!

I use to loose 1litre for 400Km on motorway...

as for funny smell I have not noticed anything.

Uk oh - losing coolant only on long motorway journeys could be a sign of a head gasket fault - pretty rare on the TDI engine, but not unknown.

after changing the cap, the thermostat, I am still consuming coolant...

it only happens on motorways at speed greater than 120KPH and after 200 Km I will now consume 1litre... its getting worst...

I suppose it is the head gasket, no alternatives is there?

How am I gonna get rid of this stupid motor now??? a head gasket it is going to cost me a small fortune???

do you think a small garage can do it?
