marinabrid Posted October 8, 2005 Report Posted October 8, 2005 just out of curiosity to all booster heater owners, if one starts up the engine from cold on a cold frosty mornin and the booster kicks in, how long should it take for the temp gauge to move or produce heat, should it be sort of normal working temp within say 15mins of ticking over or is it desinged to assist the engine when the cars moving to get up to temp quickjust trying to fathom wheather mines workin g right. the thing kicks in from cold after around 30secs running then switches off for 15 secs then jumps into life again and runs fine.thanks Quote
GSMGuy Posted October 8, 2005 Report Posted October 8, 2005 Have a feel of the water hoses under the car, they'll take forever, and I mean forever to get warm on a cold day with the engine idling... If you can feel warmth after a few mins, it's safe to assume all is well... My aux heater runs almost continuously in the winter - well it did last year anyway, have only heard it a couple of times this year so far... Strange thing though... How many other TDi owners mentally check the temp display and listen to make sure the aux heater fires up on cold mornings.... or is it just me lol.. Mike Quote
Guest blatters Posted October 8, 2005 Report Posted October 8, 2005 Martin, I would take a different approach to finding out if it's working similar to GSM guy. My experience is that the heater kicks in when the outside temperature is below aroud 12c. It runs continuously until the engine temperature has moved well into the 1/4 to normal zone on the dashboard. It will kick in again periodically if the heat produced by the engine is insufficient to keep things around normal. So, if you're going downhill much then that will result in the heater kicking in. Is your heater working? If the temp dial on the dashboard is steady on cold days then I reckon your booster heater is doing its job properly. If it moves up and down from normal when you go up & down hills and are on idle in town then the booster heater is not working as it should. I had this problem last year when the booster heater would not fire up. The dealer solved it and the temp dial started behaving as it should - up to normal and never moving thereafter. Within 3 miles from cold the dial is moving up toward 1/4, at 55mph. Best wishes. Blatters Quote
marinabrid Posted October 8, 2005 Author Report Posted October 8, 2005 yes mr blatters the things fires up and seems to work ok i was just wondering about other peoples warm up ntime if the car was left idling from cold with the booster going, should it get the temp gauge up to the normal middle position on its own or does it just assist the engine in doing that when you get moving Quote
Ogben Schmutzel Posted October 10, 2005 Report Posted October 10, 2005 This might help!! My Aux heater is not working at the moment and on the coolish (55 F or less) mornings we have had so far it is about 10/15 minutes before any movement on the temp gauge, then it seems to struggle to the middle but unlike blatters I don Quote
