Guest Pasty Boy Posted October 6, 2005 Report Posted October 6, 2005 I have a snag with my front wipers. In the intermittent mode they stop in the incorrect position  anywhere between the rest position and the edge of the windscreen position. If i switch to normal or fast mode they work perfectly alright until i turn them off and once again they choose any postion but the correct rest position. A quick dab of the stalk for a quick wipe and they still laugh at me and stop wherever they want :oThe relay in the fuse box is energising correctly but I can't find the timing circuit (if there is one?) Also the wiper motor makes a small clicking sound(cyclic) whilst running. Is it possible the motor is on the way out? This is obviously a driving hazard and so i need some help before the local Ford/Seat garage dealer gets a piece of my wallet :o Many thanks in advance.... Quote
Bigjeeze Posted October 6, 2005 Report Posted October 6, 2005 Well Pasty Boy - I could be completely wrong but I think you may have the dreaded pre seizure of wipers that is so common on the Galaxy. I had mine go in a similar way - whereby they started not quite reaching thew edge and then not stopping where they used to. The wiper spindles seem to lose their lubrication and start to seize up - and for a while the motor copes until the day it packs up. I would suggest checking the spindles whilst the wpiers are running - if you carefully put your hand on the base by the spindel and it feels hot then that may be your problem. Of course it may be an electrical fault but have a look anyway. There are lots of threads on this forum that deal with this issue. Cheers Quote
Guest Pasty Boy Posted October 6, 2005 Report Posted October 6, 2005 Many thanks for your reply, i have read the various posts on this site but my symptons are not that bad. I had a go at the hot spindle idea. By the spindles i presume you mean the joints that are accessible as i can see other joints near the motor. There did not appear to be any heat on these joints. Though the seizure issue could be right as I have had to replace a an arm which had a worn socket joint. However, i think it's more likely to be electrical - do you know where the timing circuit is located? Quote
Guest Pasty Boy Posted October 6, 2005 Report Posted October 6, 2005 The wiper relay I found in the fuse box (labelled 53) appears to only provide the power for it: - When the ignition is on, it is permantly engergised. The wires from this run into a loom which head of up behind the steering wheel and into the engine compartment. So i was assuming the timing circuit was separate. I'll strip the wiper arms/spindles this weekend and see if that helps. Other than that it looks like it will have to go to the Stealer! :o Many thanks for all your help. Quote
Rallim Posted October 6, 2005 Report Posted October 6, 2005 The timing / control for the wipers I think will be performed by the Central Electronics Module, which is responsible for a lot of the auxillary electronics in the car (not to be confused with the engine ECU) like door locks, interior lights and it would seem the wipers. To support this further I have just had VAG-COM connected to the car looking at my auxillary heater but I also looked at the Central Electronics measurements and contained within these was indication when the wipers were operating. I would start with the spindles as you are planning, as the passenger side spindle on mine had seized up causing the wipers to stop half way. Gordon. Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted October 6, 2005 Report Posted October 6, 2005 The CJB/GEM replace the old style fuse board with all the relays clipped to it in 98 a lot of the independant control ECU's were incorperated into the CJB/GEM including the wiper control timer unit! there is still a relay for the wipers, relay 21, but the timer functions are controlled by the CJB/GEM if this unit fails apparently the wiper will still work on speeds 1 and 2 but not intermitant! so it sounds like yours is ok and the problem may be with the wiper spindles as suggested? Guest Pasty Boy Posted October 9, 2005 Report Posted October 9, 2005 Right I got the facia off and had a good look at the spindles etc and everything looks just fine. All the joints are well lubricated and it all runs smoothly. With my hand on the motor and the wipers running on intermittent I can feel when the motor stops and starts and it is definitely stopping far too soon, so i guess it must be the timing circuit and the CEM. :) So anyone know where this CEM is? and how much it's goner burn a hole in my wallet. I suppose it might just be easier to put in at the local dealer to fix?Since this CEM controls various items it might explain some other minor faults i have:Rear wiper sometimes stops in middle of stroke :( Drivers Side electric window goes half way up and then reverses direction :) (have to hold button down!) Interior clock light - sometimes on sometimes off :( N/S electric mirror wont tilt in vertical plane :D Ok nothing to do with the wipers but, now i'm becoming more intimate with my baby, and taking panels out etc does anyone know what the connector underneath the ashtray is for? seatkid Posted October 9, 2005 Report Posted October 9, 2005 The problem with your wipers sounds like a duff wiper parking switch. This is built into the wiper motor but IIRC someone posted something about this long long ago. Time to dig around in the TIS..... Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted October 9, 2005 Report Posted October 9, 2005 looks like this one? if so as stated diagnostic socket, anything else under the ashtray will most likely be for the illumination lamp for the ashtray Quote

Guest Pasty Boy Posted October 9, 2005 Report Posted October 9, 2005 Many thanks for those posts. The picture of the Ashtray socket thats exactly what it looks like. :) SeatKid: what is IIRC? I presume TIS is tech section? I have read loads of old posts in the tech section and have got lots of good info :( . I think the fuse panel is the new type as there are only one or two relays and looks nothing the diagram Old Post I will investigate all these ideas and post again with my findings. Many thanks to all again. :D Quote
soptom Posted October 9, 2005 Report Posted October 9, 2005 IIRC - If I Remember Correctly. TIS is the Technical Information System, IIRC :( It is Fords system, you can buy a c.d. (Compact Disc) :) of it on eBay for a few quid, it is handy. Quote
seatkid Posted October 10, 2005 Report Posted October 10, 2005 I think the fuse panel is the new type as there are only one or two relays and looks nothing the diagram Old Post Which diagram? You may have a 97 model ( made till mid 98) or a 98 model. There were lots of changes to the electrics and are completely different. Quote
Guest Pasty Boy Posted October 10, 2005 Report Posted October 10, 2005 This diagram:http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/uploads/post-62-1077744568.gif My fuse box looks like this:http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/uploads/post-62-1077622065.jpg So i assume i have a 98 fuse panel? Quote
Guest marcusheawood Posted October 10, 2005 Report Posted October 10, 2005 I think you do have a 09/1998 model... In which case there is a wiper control module listed which is separate from the motor but which lurks nearby. Maybe this module has gotten damp, picture suggests it is non-serviceable (sealed), but maybe not... Quote
