:D please can any one help with this problem i have to top my oil up about every 2 weeks it never goes below min and i never top up over max line i go through a can of oil about 1 every 2 months is this about wright for a galaxy i.ve spoken to my local car shop he said every 1000 miles you should use a hole can of oil which is about 2 months useing abouit 5 cans of oil in a year about 10.000 12.000 miles year pleas can any one help. :)

Hi there

 

You don'y say which engine you have or how big the can of oil is but I used to have an AUDI S4 Quattro 98 and that would use 1 litre every 1000 miles. Local dealer said that oil usage was 'acceptable'.

I have a 110bhp Tdi and the manual says you should check the oil level every 500miles, usage could be 1L every 500 miles if I remember correctly. However, I driven our car 2,500 miles now and it doesn't seemed to have consumed any oil at all I'm glad to say.

Hi Paul, I know this was posted a fair time ago but can you tell me about the outcome? you dont say what make/model/engine,but Im having the same symptoms with my 115 galaxy tdi

My 6 week old Galaxy 115 TDI has done 6500 miles (OUCH!!!)

 

I've put in 1 litre to date.

 

This seems to be what they get through.

Between the 9,400 mile first service and now, 17,500 miles, I have added 1 Litre in two 0.5 L goes.

 

Seems then it consumes 1 Litre per 9000 miles. Not bad for a diesel.

Between 0 and 8900 (1st service) I added 0.5Litres at 5000 miles to top it up to the full mark.

From then to 19100 at the second service I got fed up of looking to see if I needed to top up.

Just before the service I checked and it was 1/2mm below the top.

After service ( and 3rd lot of oil) its 1 or 2mm above full.

According to a guy at millers (oils) in leic's, fully synthetic 5w40 is a light oil that.........wait for it ........"partly evaporates"! Given that the oil level deminishes earlier than anticipated I get caught out when the warning buzzer and light alert me, ie,when I'm working. So I check it while the engine is hot - rather than cold as most users would. For this reason I see something that many users dont...steam escaping from the oil filler port when the cap is removed! WOULD SOMEBODY ELSE TRY THIS PLEASE ? So if my symptoms are duplicated elsewhere it would seem that there IS evaporation taking place. I wonder if the oil is hydrogenated ? (HYDRO = WATER)

Sounds a bid dodgy to me. Water and oil do not mix, so the oil won't be hydrogenated (err, hydro = water, hydrogen..ated = hydrogen???).

Maybe it's some of the "lighter" things in the oil "burning off" at temperature in the engine, but then why would they be in the oil if they were going to get burnt off?

When hot, removing the filler cap will allow oil mist and fumes to escape.

 

The engine normally draws the fumes back in through the crank ventilation, and the inlet manifold.

 

It is normal for the oil to be gradually used in this way. Some of the fumes are ring bypass products too.

Hydrodgenate = To harden with Hydrogen.

This is usualy done to oils and fats used in the food process industry. NOT GOOD for us mear mortals though :rolleyes: .
