chromedome Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 Hi I reported on another thread that I had problems with my auto gearbox only intermittently selecting third gear only. This problem seems to have cleared after I pulled the fuse for the auto gearbox. However, the problem has now come back and the little engine symbol on the dash is now on continously. As my dealer can't look at for another week, my question is can I still drive the car? Thanks in advance for any comments you may have. Quote
Dally Posted December 11, 2003 Report Posted December 11, 2003 what was the problem in the end? I've just been told I need a new autobox on my 6 month old 2.8 V6. Quote
chromedome Posted December 11, 2003 Author Report Posted December 11, 2003 The problem was the electronic gearbox controller. Replaced and now working properly. Quote
Guest yurir Posted December 11, 2003 Report Posted December 11, 2003 I had similar symptoms to what chromedome reported in Auto Gearbox Problem Turned out it was the harness from the controller to autobox; a wire had chaffed in the clips over the years, and broken, and would intermittently go open circuit. Because the harness passes close to the starter, stopping and restarting the car seemed to clear the fault sometimes, probabaly through the sheer vibration. First off. garage wanted to replace the autobox ECU, but couldn't becasue it had just been changed replaced under warranty. Unfortunately, my warranty doesn't cover wiring. Garage charged me 2hrs fault finding labour. Have a funny feeling they knew what it was all along. I would suggest that if possible, give the harness a good visual, or even remove it completely and give it a continuity test, while flexing. The starter will need to come off to get at the cable. stairforce Posted December 16, 2005 Report Posted December 16, 2005 Yuri, Many thanks for that. My auto box is in limp home mode (posted elsewhere on here). Gal has been at the stealers last 2 days - diagnostic is reporting 2 faulty autobox sensors. Well these things are inanimate, they don't come out in sympathy when one dies, so for 2 to die at the same time suggests wiring problems. And this timely post tells me where to look! :P Re Auto ECU, funny how the stealers always want to change the most expensive part first... I've learned more about the Galaxy in one month of ownership than I did about its predecessor (BMW 523i) in 6 years! I'm just trying to work out whether this is a good thing or not <_< Quote
