Hi folks please help. I'm doing my timing belt (1.9 TDi 1999) I've set the engine up on TDC camshaft bar and pump locking pin in place but i cant see the timing mark on the flywheel i am using a mirror and a torch (stupid place for an inspection hole if you ask me) but i cant see the flywheel mark. Until i see the mark is lined up i ain't taking the old belt off.Engine was running perfect so dont think timing is out.The old belt has got a big split in it so doing it just in time.Anyone got a tip on how to see this flywheel mark.many thanks.

I spent about an hour before I did the following:

I used a deep 10mm socket to remove the No1 Glow plug, put a stiff wire down the glow plug hole as a probe and turned the engine until it was about TDC. Then I found the mark on the flywheel by tweaking the crank back and forwards a touch at at time. If you do this take care though, you can't just put the wire in you have to lift it up, move the piston up in the bore, probe, and repeat until you find it.

I also had to remove all the gubbins round the battery tray and the intercooler pipe too though. It really is a pig to do in an engine compartment where the engine is under the front of the car....

Totally agree about being a pig of a job, thinking of all the labour charge i am saving is keeping me smiling (at the moment). What does the timing mark look like all i have found is a small raised bump on the upper face behind the ring gear, sorry about vague discription.Cheers

No, it is a definate stamp-mark into the flat edge of the flywheel. It is not like on the TIS though. It is obvious once you find it though, but there is no pointer on the housing, you have to center it in the hole.

If you take the tdc pins out the top and turn it over till they come back up again then look at the bottom they may be there this time i'm sure it once for the top twice for the bottom,I've just woken up so might be talking bollo*ks.

Just been out side AGAIN,cleaned edge of flywheel with long cotton buds (don't take the p**s) now i can see a definite stamp mark lined up with a pointer in the hole looking down. What does the mark look like?

Realised i done timing belt without disconnecting battery, should i disconnect it b4 starting engine to clear ecu memory and let it relearn values. Not having a good day.

Nah, the pullies on the pump and the cam are twice the size of the crank so they turn at half the speed. If the pins go in it should be TDC on No1

Finished doing belt and engine started first spin only thing is new belt runs in slightly different position on pulleys than old one any reason for this? (ford belt and tensioner fitted)

No, it is just sitting on the pully differently, as long as it is the same width as the old one then there is no need to worry.
