hoping someone can help!

 

Over the last week have been 'using' hugh amounts of petrol, at one stage i thought it may have been the gauge at fault as the loss was so bad - 50 miles almost emptied the tank from full.... nothing obvious in terms of leak or performance. popped it into local garage who ran emission test - all clear and no sign of an obvious leak anywhere.

 

Can anyone offer advise

Where are you parking it? Petrol shortage etc, someone could be siphoning it off

i would suspect someone maybe nicking your fuel lol, that's a massive amount of fuel to loose, and if there's no sign of a leak?

 

do you happen to have a 17 year old son, who has a petrol 'speedster', who maybe short of a bit of money, or doesn't want to pay for the fuel? lol

If you had a leak that bad, the car would stink of petrol.

 

Another possibility is that you did not fill it up as you thought. I have done this before where you are filling the car, the petrol splashes back and the pump cuts out. You think the tank is full yet it is not.

 

Parking on a steep hill can also seriously affect the gauge reading. Front down makes it read low.

Well the engine would not run with that much fuel going in. The Lambda would cut the fueling.

 

Any leaks would show as that volume of fuel being lost would leave a mark.

 

The only time I got through fuel anything like that quick was when a fuel pipe ruptured and the fuel was being pumped out. The car still ran OK though as there was still enough pressure for it to run.

 

But a leak like that would show the minute the key was turned if the car was in a garage or on ramps.

 

So the theft issue looks favourite right now.....

i would still suspect the gauge , get yourself a fuel can fill it up, put it in the car ignore the gauge and drive it till it stops , this has two advantages , 1 it will prove that the gauge is faulty , 2 the fuel level will be that low that you can change the tank gauge . there is another possability i dont know if it is available on vag com but there maybe a test for the dash gauge to prove or disprove its accuracy

ok, how about you go to a petrol station, and fill it, and when it clicks off, keep filling it until its full to the cap, then you know the tank must be full, then see if the petrol disappears like it has been doing, and if it doesn't, you know that the gauge is knacked, but surly you would know if you've put a full tank in? ie, when the tank is empty, i can get 45 - 50 quid in easy, so i know ive put a lot in, obviously, if the gauge says its empty, but it only takes

If your cap/filling flap doesn't lock then find a way to lock it.

 

My mum had rodent damage on her Astra - the rats even bit through a fuel line. It only leaked (understatement) when the engine was running, straight onto the hot exhaust so the petrol evaporated straight away. How it didnt catch fire I dont know.

 

Keep looking (with the engine running) - it must be a leak and could be dangerous......

thanks to all for helpful and humerous replies!. It looks like it may have been an airlock as all now is back to normal.

 

on a related note is there a locking fuel cap available?

you could fit an after market one? but it's deemed not needed as the petrol flap locks! does yours?

Thanks, yes the flap does lock, but i have now lost the screw cap! I have tried a couple of aftermarket ones but they dont fit as they are to 'fat' I have ordered one form Ford at
