corskey Posted September 27, 2005 Report Posted September 27, 2005 Hi, I was towing the caravan back from Wales last week, when 5miles from home I heard a loud blowing/sucking noise from the Engine compartment when I tried to accelerate. Along with the noise came bucketfuls of black smoke fron the exhaust when I accelerate, and (I think) a loss of power. The oil is at the bottom of the dipstick and wasn't checked too long ago. I don't think that there are any more symptons. Is it my poor auld turbo that's given up the ghost, or something even more serious. Why would it be burning soo much oil?? Any pointers are gratefully accepted. Corskey Quote
Guest marcusheawood Posted September 27, 2005 Report Posted September 27, 2005 Sounds like a pipe or the intercooler has burst or a clip snapped causing a pipe to come off on the inlet pressure side somewhere between the turbo and the engine (intercooler?). Quote
corskey Posted September 27, 2005 Author Report Posted September 27, 2005 thanks, would this also account for the taxi-like black smoke?? Quote
seatkid Posted September 27, 2005 Report Posted September 27, 2005 Has it been chipped or tuning boxed? Quote
corskey Posted September 27, 2005 Author Report Posted September 27, 2005 Nope, no modifications to the engine at all Quote
Guest marcusheawood Posted September 27, 2005 Report Posted September 27, 2005 Black smoke is a good sign, it means unburnt diesel rather than burnt engine oil. You may well have an oil leak causing the dipstick to drop rapidly, fix it. Clearly the engine thinks it's getting enough pressurised air to mix with all that unburnt fuel. It certainly sounds like the turbo is blowing air somewhere, have you cracked the lid with someone revving the engine? Did it blow your wig off? Could you hear that loud sucking noise? Where is it coming from? Get more info. Quote
seatkid Posted September 27, 2005 Report Posted September 27, 2005 Yes, thinking about it it is a leak at or after the turbo, i.e. intercooler or pipework. MAF is on the inlet side and thinks everything is OK, so fuelling is unaffected, just insufficient air. But on the other hand the TMAP sensor hasn't tripped the ECU - strange.... Check the intercooler isn't holed and leaking... Quote
Guest marcusheawood Posted September 27, 2005 Report Posted September 27, 2005 ...TMAP may well be gunged up, if it was reading low manifold pressure wouldn't it just ask the turbo for more boost, is it possible that it's over-boosting hence burst pipework? OP says he THINKS he lost power, perhaps he's just losing boost pressure, a smallish leak would sound hellish loud (cue evil plughole sucking sounds). Quote
tim-spam Posted September 28, 2005 Report Posted September 28, 2005 Forget all about t-map sensors, etc.. One of the joints between the turbo outlet and inlet manifold has blown off - probably due to some service clown having removed it and not refitted it properly. The noise you get is induction roar and sounds not unlike a blowing exhaust - remember that a diesel works with no throttle, so induction noise is generally louder than on a petrol engine. Just locate the joint affected, inspect for damage, and if undamaged, refit ensuring that the hose concerned is properly located and the clip properly seated. Quote
corskey Posted September 28, 2005 Author Report Posted September 28, 2005 The car is now at a garage - it's the same muppet that punctured a pipe to 0r from the turbo a couple of months when he was repairing the drive shaft. So thanks to tim-spam I'm not too worried about the whooshing / sucking sound. It still worried me a little about the black smoke. It was revved higher than normal trying to climb a hill, though it wasn't in the red! I can only hope that the lid (I assume of the turbo) isn't cracked.   Quote
Guest marcusheawood Posted September 28, 2005 Report Posted September 28, 2005 I've already explained the black smoke AND the noise; do you want your hand held or TECHNICAL information! FFS! CRACKED THE LID MEANS: OPENED THE BONNET!!!!!  Quote
