mike99 Posted September 25, 2005 Report Posted September 25, 2005 I bought my first galaxy a few days ago and when I was looking at it I noticed some rust. the seller said its normal for galaxies around this age and said she'd seen a few like it. Its a 1999 V plate by the way. The rust is along the bottom of both back door, both rear wings mainly near side, below the nearside tail lamp and below the nearside rear quarter window. does anyone else have these problems? A local bodyshop said I should get new back doors? and the wings would need cutting out and replacing? Is it not possible to repair the rust, they do on wheeler dealers on sky!! Thanks in advance,Mike. Quote
seatkid Posted September 25, 2005 Report Posted September 25, 2005 NO! Its not usual, never really seen a rusty galaxy except where sills or wings been damaged. It has a six year body corrosion warranty so check this out first. Are you within the six years? Take it to a dealer and ask, maybe even if its out they may be able to do something....... Quote
galaxychap Posted September 25, 2005 Report Posted September 25, 2005 yup mine is an N plate no rust so something not right there id take it back if you have just brought it Quote
mike99 Posted September 25, 2005 Author Report Posted September 25, 2005 I can't take it back as I bought it privately.Don't you have to get the book stamped for the anti corrosion warranty to be effective?? Quote
Masked Marauder Posted September 25, 2005 Report Posted September 25, 2005 My 1998 has a small (10p sized) patch of rust on the tailgate, by the screen seal. Other than that it is the most rust-less car I have ever owned. Quote
mike99 Posted September 25, 2005 Author Report Posted September 25, 2005 what about repair??Can it be ground down to bare metal, treated, primed and resprayed? or will it come back?? Quote
seatkid Posted September 25, 2005 Report Posted September 25, 2005 Full service history is not necessary for Body Corrosion warranty AFAIK. (don't think changing the oil would have helped stop the rust...) Take it in and ask...I had a Passat door changed at 5 years and 11 months....and it had never seen a garage..... Quote
mike99 Posted September 25, 2005 Author Report Posted September 25, 2005 its still within 6 years as it was registered 23 dec 99. I might give it a try, but knowing my local ford dealer they won't be interested! Quote
mike99 Posted September 25, 2005 Author Report Posted September 25, 2005 Is there any mileage restrictions aswell as 6 years?? Quote
seatkid Posted September 25, 2005 Report Posted September 25, 2005 NO...they must honour the warranty....... page 20 of service booklet... OBSERVATION ON THE WARRANTYIn addition to the warranty..... -vehicles sold in Europe are also granted a warranty of: 6 years from the date of delivery against corrosion perforation of the bodywork. If any such damage should arise, it will be repaired by any SEAT Official Service Centre in Europe without any labour or part's charges ....just read the terms (of my SEAT warranty) and quite clearly the only getouts areThere is no right to warranty if: damage is due to exterior influence or insufficient care of the vehice. any bodywork damage is not repaired in due time and in a professional manner, following the manufacturer's regulations corrosion perforation is due to failure to use original spare parts in bodywork repair Quote
mike99 Posted September 25, 2005 Author Report Posted September 25, 2005 just checked my ford service book and handbook and I cant find anything about it. Quote
seatkid Posted September 25, 2005 Report Posted September 25, 2005 Ford web siteThe bodywork of your Ford is covered against rust-through from the inside for up to 12 years (depending on the model). Any costs of repairs are met by Ford provided the bodywork is cared for as described in your owner's guide. Damage or rusting should be reported to your Ford dealer or to a Ford Accident Repair centre. This check can be carried out during your annual service if applicable. Contact your dealer to arrange a check today. Why are people so frightened of going and talking to their dealer about warranty issues? My experience is if they can possibly do it, they will, as they make good money on manufacturers warranty claims Quote

mike99 Posted September 29, 2005 Author Report Posted September 29, 2005 OK, so I took the car to the local fraud dealer today and the guy had a look at the rust. He took some digi camera pics and he said he would email them to the bodyshop, I should hear within 6 weeks. They send the estimate to ford who then get an independant RAC inspector to come and check the rust. I'll keep you posted on how I get on. Quote
gregers Posted September 29, 2005 Report Posted September 29, 2005 and i bet the warrenty runs out in 5 weeks and 6 days  Quote
mike99 Posted September 30, 2005 Author Report Posted September 30, 2005 runs out in december.I did mention about it, he said the claim is dated the day I informed them so should be ok. Quote
Guest ajc Posted October 17, 2005 Report Posted October 17, 2005 My 1998 has a small (10p sized) patch of rust on the tailgate, by the screen seal. Other than that it is the most rust-less car I have ever owned. My 1997 TDi Galaxy has the same. I wonder what causes this? Quote
