I am absolutely and thoroughly naffed-off with the buried-in-the-rear-quarter-window aerial. My radio is permanently tuned to Radio-5 Live (693 - don't even mention 909) and the reception near the city centre is absolutely cr@p!

I already have an external roof-mounted phone aerial fitted about six inches in from the rear tailgate. Thinking of fitting a whip aerial (blue to match my car) just forward of the sunroof. Anyone else abandoned the standard aerial for an after-market fit?

Comments/suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like something is wrong with your aerial then, as I get great reception on my built in one. Could be worth checking cables, amplifiers etc.

I must agree with HJT the reception is fine with the built in ariel. I would check the connections to it as they can get dirty or become unclipped.

Are you using an aftermarket radio? If so you will need a device that sends power down the ariel coax to the ariel booster.

I have fitted a bee-sting for my DAB radio though. You will need to drop the head-lining at the back and pick your spot to drill making sure you are not going to go through a cross-member that supports the roof.

You need to drill carefully, punch the starting point so the cutter will not skid (yes cutter, NOT a drill bit!). Then with your drill on it's lowest speed and some paraffin on your cutter to lubricate it you slowly cut the hole, it took me about 2 1/2 minutes to do that. I know that because that is how long I can hold my breath for....

I think it depends on where you are in the country and what time of the day you are listening. Up here the reception is crap on the AM frequencies in the evening (it noticeably deteriorates after 8pm), and in the city centre at all times of the day. Its always been like that to a degree but I have to agree that the Gal's window aerial seems to be inferior to other vehicles I've owned (none of which have been great).

After I've solved my Mp3 player problem I'm going to investigate the possibilities of getting a DAB to see if that improves radio reception for 5Live Talksport etc
