i would normally say, that it might be doing that as it "thinks" there is something (ie, a arm) stuck in the window, and so it winds down again, had the exact same fault with my corsa. but my X reg galaxy doesn't seem to do it, so i don't think a 96 would? i don't see how it could be shorting as it would blow the fuse wouldn't it?

anyone willing to comment?

Why wouldnt a Mk1 have such a thing as bounce back windows? what do you think the windows presently doing? suffering from vertigo, are painfully shy and trying to hide? :D

as chromedome suggests try lubeing the guides, also check the plug in the door for damp or corrosion of the pins? had the same thing on mine lubed the guides and the mech and it still did it, checked out the wiring and found a bitof damp in the plug :D dried it out and bobs your uncle problem solved :D till the next time it rained ;)

ps, silicon spray is better for the rubber guides than WD40!
