Offside Rear Quarter Light Window.

As a new owner of a 1998 2.3 GLX Galaxy, what is the element etched on the offside rear quarter light window with a sliding bridging contact? Its a bit like a very thick heating element.

I don't think the vehicle has an alarm, as I can't see a sonic mounted pod by the 'B' pillar (between front and rear door - think that's the 'B' pillar?).

Does it do anything ? or is it just a standard fit for an alarm regardless of alarm fitted or not?
