Hi, can anybody let me know how your car performs?

In the handbook it specifies 52 mpg out of town, but I've never been able to achieve this - not even by driving at 50 mph on the 5th gear. It's normally 40-41 mpg at 70, ~36 mpg at 80 and rising to maximum of 47 mpg at around 50 mph.

Is there anything I can do to improve it ? Could it be the worn injectors (car's done 170k, and I don't think they've been renewed)?

I'll be greatful for any suggestions.

Doubt that you will average 50mpg. Take into account much higher consumption in general driving until you get to the point where you can drive at 50 mph, and this will lower the average consumption considerably.

Depends how you drive, I average 40mpg per tank full. I got 63mpg out of it on one trip when the tanker drivers were on strike!

If you're averaging 48mpg from a tankful, that's pretty reasonable. Doubt that there's anything wrong.

As a matter of interest, according to the trip computer on my diesel Gal, I achieved approx 1.5mpg more on a journey to work last week (compared to the "normal average") just by reversing the vehicle into my driveway the previous night, so that I left pointing forwards, rather than reversing out at the start of the journey. Don't usually do this as it could mean black stains on the garage door!

I have 96 TDi 90BHP.

Just come back from hols to IOW with my caravan. Towed from Preston to IOW plus running around the island for 2 weeks with 4 adults, 1 teenager and a dog.

Averaged about 40 mpg over 956 miles travelled. I am pleased because 600 or so miles of this total was towing (1300 Kgs caravan weight).

I cannot get the stated 52 mpg either, best i can do is around 46 average.

I can never do av. 48mpg on a tankful. It was just a one-off reading after being stuck in 50mph moving traffic for about half an hour . I never average more than 41 mph on a tankful, although I tend to drive on my own, with no luggage and mostly on a motorway (average 1/2hour journey) and not exceeding 75 mph.

Does it still seem normal?

That too seems normal. Average on motorways is not that high due to large frontal area and lots of drag! If you stick to nearer 55mph though, that will increase the average mpg. Once over 60 mph, the drag really adds up!
