All Galaxy's have an imobiliser as Greger suggests, it's called PATS Passive Anti Theft System. to check if you have an alarm check the B posts above the seat belt mounts, you should have two rather large pods hideing the ultra sonic sensors? also pop the bonnet anmd see if the switch is connected on the passenger side hinge? it's operated by the candle snuffer device :o also as stated three plugs to the ECU, and in 97 only the Ultima came with an alarm as standard! on all other models it was an option :( 98 it was an option across the whole range not standard on any model! :o

Hi gregers,

thanks for the warm welcome. I did not get any manuals with my Galaxy (in fact I didn't get much at all from the stingy salesman I bought the car from fullstop!) Your offer of the manuals is very much appreciated and if you have a spare, I would be more than happy to except them.

Please let me know how we can sort this out :(

Thanks for all the help guys.

As far as I seem to remember, there is only 2 sets of wires going into/out of the box.

The only sensors I can see are the black ones (one at the front behind rear view mirror, and one at the back under high-level brake light) - I assume these to be the remoter sensors for the central locking?

So, no alarm it is then! :(

Thanks again guys,

Do I have an alarm?, the simple way to find out (It's what I did before I purchased my wife's car :-))

Open car, open all windows, close and lock car, wait for about a minute, normally a shorter amount of time, but just to make sure, then stick your hand in the open windows and wave about inside.

If you hear the alarm going :o then you have an alarm :D

If you hear nothing, then you 'probably' don't have an alarm or it possibly don't work :o

Sounds like I'm taking the wotsit, but that's what I did when the salesman didn't look too sure after I asked him :(

Hi,

thanks for the good idea :D

Why didn't I think of that :o You know, it's funny, everytime I have a problem with anything, I seem to start with the most difficult part first, often overlooking the easy things first - which turn out to be the thing wrong in the first place!

I remember once my PC wouldn't boot up and I opened it up, nearly stripped it to bare componants, and put it back together again, in a desperate bid to make the darn thing work, it soon transpired that my young son had swithed the plug off from the socket! :o still, at least I found the problem! :(

I'll go give it a go, thanks again.

Hey, re that PC, you dont work at my IT department. They usually swap out and replace systems that have had floppy disks left in em!

IIRC sticking your hand through the window wouldnt set the alarm off. You would need to open the door. I had a mate with a 2000 Mondeo, some nobbers broke into his garage, smashed the window, climbed through, got in the boot, nicked his tools, back out thorugh the window and the alarm never went off because they never touched the door handles ! Beware....

Well the ultasonics on mine work fine. If I stick my hand in the window the alarm goes off.

You get alarms which work on the battery level which basically wait for an interior light to go on for the alarm to trigger, ie, opening a door or the boot with put the interior/boot light on and BINGO! the alarm will trigger, other systems have extra sensors much the same as the door/boot light switch, but these are on the bonnet, same idea open the bonnet and BINGO! the alarm will trigger, trouble is, you smash the glass (a very "distinctive" noise), don't open the door, the boot or the bonnet and everything from inside the car get's robbed, yes and the boot if you can get in their - So to get around that one, nearly all modern vehicles now have ultrasonic's to scan the interior of the car incase of a smashed window. These HOWEVER are not totally fool-proof, so you can upgrade the options on the alarm system, like anti-jacking, so you are not able to jack the car up and nick the alloys of it! It happens?

The most common upgrade sensor-wise seems to be microwave. You can set these so that if anyone comes too close to your car it sets off a quick chirp warning.
Posted
Yep , my mate's car had that upgrade, it's fine until you park in Tesco's (kiddie spaces are okay :)) One time we all went to Butlins for a weekend and we heard the bloody thing every hour! with security walking up and down in the main car park

Which only goes to show that alarms do nothing but annoy people. I can't imagine anyone reacting to an alarm even if someone was breaking in to vehicle. Only situation would be to report you to local council as noise nuisance.....

After 2 days, he just turned the alarm off and locked the car using the key, only the immobiliser was on... Car was still there 2 days after that and with no scratches or anything to it!

He has since got rid off the car and always stuck with the stardard factory fit alarm...

My Sharan mk2 has the ultrasonic sensors fitted above the seat belt guides. Has worked fine, although just after I got the car last year it kept going off at night if it was windy. I opended the pods and cleaned them. Since then it has been fine.

I agree with you Seatkid, people ignore them, they are only of use to the owner, ie I would like to know if someone was interfering with it outside my house.

Hi everyone,

Well, I finally figured out that I do not have an alarm.

I managed to locate a new central locking ECU for a third of the price of Ford, and after fitting it, I was so glad to see my little light on the door flashing :o

I then tried to follow the instructions for reprogramming the key, but alas, it will not go into "programming mode" (the little light should stay on I assume)

I made sure all my doors were locked, unlocked the car, turned the key three times (to the unlock position) and held it for 1/2 second each time, but no constant red light! Actually, I tried 3, 5 , and 10 times! but still no good

I thought all my troubles would be over once I got a new ECU, but that's not so! :o

what are the list of problems I am faced with now?

any ideas from you guys would be really appreciated.

thanks.
