michael.galaxy Posted August 23, 2005 Report Posted August 23, 2005 Can anyone help me pleaseI renewed all my brake pads at the weekend after which if the engine is running the brake pedal travels all the way to the floor if I leave the engine off the brake pedal feels normal. I put the old pads back on but the problem is still there.Ford have said its the master cylinder but it seems odd that the pedal feels normal with the engine not runningAny help would be appreciated Quote
johnb80 Posted August 23, 2005 Report Posted August 23, 2005 This has come up before, there have been comments that the galaxy is over servo'd and that this behaviour is normal. My view is that it ain't normal and something is wrong. Try clamping the hoses to the front wheels and see if the brake pedal is normal, if it is then release the clamps one at a time that will identify the corner with the problem. Did you slacken the bleed nipple when pushing back the piston? if not it's possible you may have damaged the master cylinder (some seals can flip over on some cars). Regards - John Quote
Guest marcusheawood Posted August 23, 2005 Report Posted August 23, 2005 ...I think that you've flipped your seals! arfarf B) Seriously though, you have. Get a new master cylinder. Quote
Bigjeeze Posted August 23, 2005 Report Posted August 23, 2005 After checking to see where the problem appears to be I would go fo a bleed. The worst that can happen is you waste a little fluid - the best you'll cure it. It sounds like you didn't clamp the hoses and bleed so you have air in the system. It may be best to go for a complete fluid change to ensure no dirt gets into the ABS . It's definitely a cheaper option than a new Master Cylinder! Quote
Guest marcusheawood Posted August 23, 2005 Report Posted August 23, 2005 ...Yes yes, but how does air get into the system simply by forcing the pistons back into the caliper? It doesn't! Sounds like hopeless optimism over common sense to me. Why waste all that time and all that new brake fluid and then have to do it all again with a new master cyclinder. How much is your time worth? Modern cars are known for flipping seals, thats why every garage opens the nipples before retracting the pistons. It wasn't always like this, but then you used to be able to buy service kits for master cylinders as well. Quote
michael.galaxy Posted August 24, 2005 Author Report Posted August 24, 2005  Thjanks for all your help but I think I am going for a new master cylinder as marcusheawood said how can air have got into the system when no bleed nipples were undone and no slave cylinder pistons came outThanks again for all your coments and helpGREAT SITE FOR GALAXY OWNERS Quote
