Have just decorated the front N/S alloy wheel of my nearly-new 1.9TDI Ghia by lacerating it against a kerbstone. Can this sort of damage be fixed? If so, by whom and how do they do it? Any recommendations near central London? It's ruinously expensive, I presume.

Not really...

They are castings, and therefore cannot successfully be welded or weld filled.

The best you can do is have them dressed and relacquered, but only if the damage is minor superficial.

New wheel.....

My second-hand Gal came with 4 nice, kerbed alloys.

You can try www.wheelrefurbishing.co.uk but you will need to send the wheels (prices are per wheel, assuming min of 4 wheels sent) leaving you with no transport(!). Cost seems to be about

My husband and I spent many many years working for an alloy wheel manufacturer based in Telford. I shall not tell you the name because it went bust 2 years ago!!

He use to refurb wheels on the cheap - foreigners!!!

Poly and paint lifting can be rectified by having the wheel stripped or sand blasted and then re-primered, painted. BUT... this kind of `damage' could be down to porosity in the wheel so in time it will happen again!

Kerbing and other facial damage can be machined out to an extent but you can only machine so much off the front face.

If I did need my wheels doing I'd ask a wheel manufacturer first whether they would fix it! nudge nudge wink wink!
