Guest oilboy Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 I have a 1999 tdi 90 Galaxy 72k miles and have been suffering from a loss of power problem. It goes well enough on the flat but has no power at all on inclines. On hills where I used to be able to cruise up in 5th no problem I am now having to drop down to 4th or sometimes even 3rd and still the engine dies! I have read most of the postings regarding the MAF sensor and suspect that this could be the problem. It just confuses me that the car has power on the flat, is it possible for the MAF to be partially working ie on its way out. A dealer has suggested that I have smoke test done to rule out an injector related problem but I think that this could be a red herring as the vehicle does'nt belch out clouds of smoke even when revving hard in 3rd on a hill. Can anyone offer a suggestion, this is spoiling my appreciation of an otherwise excellent car. Quote
Redbird Posted July 17, 2003 Report Posted July 17, 2003 Hi Oilboy! I'm having the exact same problem. The first thing my local Ford service centre did was replace the MAF sensor, but that did nothing. I took the car back and now they say I need 3 new fuel injectors - I am currently waiting for them to be ordered in. Thankfully I'm still under warranty (bought an 98R second hand in May). Interestingly, the previous owner had the self same problem, but following the pre-collection service it disappeared for about 3-4 weeks (and about 2000 miles). I will let you know how the fuel injector swap goes - have you had any luck yet? Quote
Redbird Posted July 29, 2003 Report Posted July 29, 2003 Following my previous post, one MAF sensor and three fuel injectors later we still have a problem. At least now, Ford have managed to make it happen in a test environment (I get a feeling they hadn't before) so they know what they are supposed to be fixing... Quote
