Guest 2.4children Posted August 10, 2005 Report Posted August 10, 2005 Auto box on my 2.3 sometimes gets `stuck` in third. If I turn off/on engine it seems to reset itself. Took in to Frauds and they reset(?) the box which was OK for one day then same again - took it back and they told me I need a new box!!!??? Then took to auto box specialist who said box is perfect but ECU faulty. Anyone shed any light or experienced same problem? Would appreciate help as off to France next Friday 19th Aug with family in car - cheers Quote
Grandad Posted August 10, 2005 Report Posted August 10, 2005 I know this sounds obvious but have you checked the level of the automatic transmission fluid? Quote
dipsomaniac Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 When there is a problem with engine/gearbox ECU will default to third in-order to limp home. The auto specialists should have read any fault codes on the engine/gearbox, checked the transmission fluid level and took it for a test drive. They should then have been able to diagnose any fault. I didn't think the ECU failing was a very common problem but there could be a 100 reasons why the gearbox is in third. I would go back to the auto specialist (unless car is under warranty) before going on holiday to get it sorted. Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 There have been a couple of cases reported on here of the loom to the gearbox failing! and causeing a few problems! check the condition of the plugs to the ECU and gearbox and if possible check the continuity of the cables in the loom! Guest stevebm1 Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 I had this problem also, and my revs were really high, were yours when it was stuck in third? Quote
Guest 2.4children Posted August 12, 2005 Report Posted August 12, 2005 Thanks everyone for your help/suggestions - Had car plugged into diagnostics machine at auto box specialist - came up `ECU defective`. He`s going to borrow an ECU and plug in to see if it actually is defective or a problem with the wiring loom. Will keep you posted and thanks again for your help/ideas. Quote
Guest EVSS Posted August 12, 2005 Report Posted August 12, 2005 exactly the same problem, pull over turn off, few seconds restart ,problem gone, mine was the loom between the ecu and the box. at some time the box had been allowed to hang on the loom, . if you do a continuity test ,pull the wiring around a bit to simulate movement. we pulled our old loom apart and although no broken wires ,we did find various hotspots where the insulation was poor.
