dulux72 Posted July 31, 2005 Report Posted July 31, 2005 Hi there Has anyone got any ideas why my 1999 tdi is very difficult to start. Hot or cold it labours for up to 10 seconds before firing. Once running its fine.A new battery has made no differenceAny ideas before I take it to the stealers Quote
Guest marcusheawood Posted July 31, 2005 Report Posted July 31, 2005 ...possibly drawing air into the fuel line somewhere? Use a clear tube and check for fizzy fuel. Quote
dulux72 Posted July 31, 2005 Author Report Posted July 31, 2005 I'll give it a try. Its driving me bloody mad !!!I'll let you know how I get on Quote
Masked Marauder Posted July 31, 2005 Report Posted July 31, 2005 ...possibly drawing air into the fuel line somewhere? Use a clear tube and check for fizzy fuel. It has a clear tube. Look under the beautification cover, the tube goes into the pump. If it is drawing air then check the pipes where they go into the filter. If it is not that, have the valve timing checked, the crank sprocket is known to slip. Quote
johnb80 Posted August 1, 2005 Report Posted August 1, 2005 Has it had a recent (ish) service? It's possible that the seal on the fuel filter is either incorrectly seated or is damaged in some way. Caio - JB Quote
Guest thobbs Posted August 1, 2005 Report Posted August 1, 2005 Would this not be knackered glow-plugs? I have heard of someone with the same thing... I might be wrong  Quote
seatkid Posted August 1, 2005 Report Posted August 1, 2005 No, not glow plugs as hot starts would be no problem.Very likely a fuel priming problem. In addition to air leaks, if the filter hasnt been changed in a long while, try draining it as it may be full of water.Could also be a camshaft or crankshaft sensor problem. Quote
dulux72 Posted August 1, 2005 Author Report Posted August 1, 2005 Thx for all the response Tonight when I get home I will try all of the suggestions and let you know Once again many thx Quote
johnb80 Posted August 1, 2005 Report Posted August 1, 2005 Would this not be knackered glow-plugs? I have heard of someone with the same thing... I might be wrong <_< You're right! You are wrong  It wont be glow plugs, they have no affect on a hot engine! Quote
dulux72 Posted August 3, 2005 Author Report Posted August 3, 2005 Ok guys Its definitely worst when the engine is warm.Checked fuel filter and drained water....only a diesel in there. Is there a sensor which changes the timing when the engine is warm ?If so do these fail ???? Help!!! Quote
Guest MATT Posted August 3, 2005 Report Posted August 3, 2005 If you are a steady driver, maybe the engine is 'clogged up' with crap. i would take it for a spin, and stay in low gear, and rev it, to get the smoke/rubbish/crap out the cylinders. don Quote
Guest marcusheawood Posted August 3, 2005 Report Posted August 3, 2005 I've just noticed that your car is chipped Dulux, can you revert to the original ECU settings? Chipped cars fuelling can 'drift', can you get it checked with a dyno run? Is it a reputable 'chip' or a cheap 'n' dodgy? Quote
Guest marcusheawood Posted August 3, 2005 Report Posted August 3, 2005 ...BTW Matt I think your post was a touch patronising, by definition a 1900 cc engine dragging a shalaxy around will always be working hard! :D The Corsa you cite is a horse of a different colour. :o Quote
dulux72 Posted August 4, 2005 Author Report Posted August 4, 2005 Ok Just to set a few things out. The chip is plugable, came from a reputable source and is currently removed.Fault wasn't there when chip first removed and has been getting worse since regardless of whether chip is in or not. I drive with heavy boots and therefore the engine is unlikely to be 'clogged' Also remember that performance isn't effected once the engine is running. I have no flat spots, no lack of power, runs as sweet as a daisy. Even with my lead boots on is currently doing about 48 mpg. The engine is a complete pig to start which becomes considerably worse when the engine is warm. Once started I love the thing. Is there a sensor which detects engine temp and adjusts timing etc for temp ??? CheersDulux Quote
Masked Marauder Posted August 4, 2005 Report Posted August 4, 2005 OK, this is really important. Your car is showing symptoms of the crankshaft timing sprocket slipping. Have your static timing checked ASAP. http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.ph...wtopic=4839&hl= http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.ph...hl=timing+pully http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.ph...5&hl=timing+out Quote
Guest neil_wiles Posted August 4, 2005 Report Posted August 4, 2005 The crankshaft position sensor or temperature sensor can also cause this type of fault. Failure Symptom- Cranking is possible but hard to start engine.- Engine malfunction during idling.- Excessive fuel injection occurs to increase fuel consumption and degrade performance. Quote
dulux72 Posted August 4, 2005 Author Report Posted August 4, 2005 Thx Masked Marauder I am taking the car to the dealer on Monday and I'll let you know the result. It would be a great car if the bloody thing would start :D Quote
dulux72 Posted August 17, 2005 Author Report Posted August 17, 2005 Well guys here's the update Car went to dealers 10 days ago and we collected it today. Temp sensor was replaced for the 3rd time NO CHANGEBUT if sensor is disconnected car starts fine.Reconnect it and car will labour and not start for 10 - 15 seconds but only when warm. Dealer checked timing, sensors and in the end said that the fuel pump was to blame.I'm not convinced. The car starts fine when cold and has no problems once running.I have told then to put the car back togetherand i have brought it back home. Anyone got any ideas???? could it be a faulty ECU ??? Masked Marauder Posted August 17, 2005 Report Posted August 17, 2005 There is an absolute fuel metering device in the pump, this is most likely what they suspect. It is driven by a stepper motor. It's failure should be flagged by VAG-COM etc though. Quote
