Have you tried holding the receiver outside the car to see if you get a better signal, to make sure it is the car causing the problem? Are you under trees when you are installing the receiver as this can kill a signal? Also when you first install a receiver, it can take a long time to pick up a signal (it's not uncommon for it to take 20 minutes on the very first use of a receiver). It took 7-8 minutes for my Tomtom wired version and 15 minutes for my compact flash version.

Sometimes it can take ages to pick up the signals. you just have to wait.

I have Navman 510 and heated front screen.

I invested in an external antenna and find that although I get a signal without it, I get a much better signal with it.

Thanks, that's something i have wondered about, but out of three blocks of signal, i usually get 2 - 3, once its found the sats.

Mmmmm - I'm sceptical.

Someone at work, who's adimant that sat nav won't work though a heated screen brought their Nav Man into work. To test it he asked me to name a place, so I named the small village I'm going to in Italy - I eventually reached a City south of Milan, before it recognised it, but still no maps. He explained this was because he'd only loaded maps for |France, Austria and northern Italy - I hear you say that Milan is in northern Italy!

OK I moved onto France - still no luck. He did say that with a 1 gb card he could store maps for the whole of Europe though - Why would you want to do that?

Eventually I let him choose, but we got nothing. After half an hour and him saying that it cost

although these things CAN be a pig to set up, once there running i think they are very good.

I am very pleased with my purchase, and will trreasure it, as it saves so much argument with the wife.

Mmmm! and while your still folding your maps up and trying to stuff them back into the glove box we are off and running laugh.gif

Sorry - I didn't want to sound like I was knocking you guys with working GPS - The system is fantastic if it works.

Go ahead and knock all you want I'm still learning how to use mine :D tonight I hit the wrong button and ended up going the long way home :D very nice scenic route along tight Cornish lanes in the dark :D so tight and over grown that the sat signal was lost several times! now where did I put the paper map? oh yes I remember now, in the box the sat nav came in back at home in the garage :o

Was mucking about with Tomtom last night and found a place called "Lickey End" wouldn't fancy living there and trying to order stuff mail order :o :D

I can also confirm that the heated front screen has no effect on my GPS setup...

I have TT3 on my Axim with a CF GPS reciever mounted on the dash, the only time it seems to loose sat lock is under heavy foliage(?) and in tunnels etc...

I used TT3 to get me from Calais to Venice, I used route print out from ViaMichelin for reference and to keep me off the toll roads as I find the motorways very boring and prefer "route nationale" we went via Munich and the Brenner Pass to get through Austria, what a fantastic drive!!

TomTom was faultless all the way thereand back it just needed a bit of coaching to keep it off the toll roads.......

Mines got settings, for avoiding toll road, or rough ground, or motorways, and so on.

I also loose signal in tunnels, and sometimes under heavy foliage. but it soon picks up again.

I can also have it warn me of stuff (like, if the route is going to take me on a toll road)

Since my last post, i have done some testing for the best signal. I first said it did not work on the dash but to the side it is fine.

I was wrong and i admit that.

Last night i had to get out of the house for safety reasons so spent several hours in the car "investigating" (keeping my head down)

Anyway, the best place for the tom tom bluetooth V5 navigator system is to place the receiver where the clock is. That little recess holds it quite well but you loose the bottom of the clocks numbers.

It picks up 11 sats from there but from the side it could only get 9

So yes i was wrong and will stand corrected.

Sounds like a song :D....hmm but which one?

usually put my BT 338 in the centre compartment - works fine so I have never checked the number of satellites - I think you need 4 for reliable navigation and I can see the clock.

i run a laptop with a usb GPS mouse, I use Via Michelin software but am thinking of moving to infomap (so gatso's and stuff can be added).

I use ViaMichelin too but have got the speed camera installed!!

PM me your your mail address and i'll send you the details.

My Bluetooth receiver works fine, I keep it in the centre "pop-up" storage compartment so its out of view!

"Lickey End" is right by me...very quite littl place. Right next to the Lickey Hills and not far from Rovers Chinese Take-away factory in Birmingham if anyone is interested!

Ah yes, been through the "Lickeys" a few times en route to Longbridge when I used to work for an an automotive supplier.

I also have the missfortune of haveing worked in Lickey End! :(

I find my TomTom only needs one bar on the sat strength meter in order to work ok! mind you it must get rather peed off at me, as I keep ignoreing it and taking my own route! it soon gets the hint after the second or third time I ignore it's request to turn around when possible

Mine sticks nicely in that small window, its out of the way there,
