Guest saint Posted March 5, 2003 Report Posted March 5, 2003 Just bought a second hand 2000 Galaxy 2.3 Ghia manual, petrol, that seems to have developed a fault when you are trying to select 3rd gear. Both going up and coming down through the gears you appear to have found 3rd, but then there is a slight shake on the gearstick and it pops out of gear. I wondered if this is a common fault and if anyone has any ideas on how to put it right, and also what cost might be involved. Other than this it drives like a dream and we are thoroughly pleased with it. Any help would be appreciated. Pete Quote
Guest Barrye Posted March 5, 2003 Report Posted March 5, 2003 Pete This problem can occur on 5 speed Tdi's, not sure if it is the same box on the 2.3 ( Ford vs VW?). Anyway on a Tdi it is caused by worn synchro rings and needs a gearbox rebuild to fix. There is a thread about this on the old site. I seem to remember a figure of Quote
Guest Geordie_Steve Posted April 1, 2003 Report Posted April 1, 2003 Pete Get it sorted straight away. I've had this problem with my `99(T) 2.3 zetec for a couple of months which i put down to me not selecting 3rd properly. This has now, as of tonight, developed into not been able to select any gears at all (Nice man from the AA had to tow the girlfriend home). I've only had this car since september 2002 and already its had new disc's & pads to the front(@37000 miles), water pump(38000 miles), air con motor(again 38000 miles), timing belt tensioner(42000 miles) & now the gear box(44000+ miles). I'm now hoping my 2 year free warranty covers the cost of repair. Since the car can't be drive to the dealers under its own steam, i bet i've got to wait at least a week for them to pick it up with there tow truck. I hope they don't offer me a new Fiesta or a Ka as a courtesy car as we had a weekend break planned for away for family and friends for this weekend to celebrate my 40th birthday (can you guess how many were due to travel in my car). Car problems always seem to happen every time i plan a trip from home. Steve Ps It's also got the noisy starter motor problem when starting from cold, which my Ford dealer denies is a problem on my car because they cannot hear it, which is why the timing belt tensioner was changed. Guest SA Intruder Posted April 1, 2003 Report Posted April 1, 2003 It's a Ford box. Unfortunately. Quote
Guest Barrye Posted April 2, 2003 Report Posted April 2, 2003 Is the 5 speed Tdi gearbox a ford or VW one. I did find a Ford logo on a plastic bung in the top of the bell housing a while ago. I had assumed it was a VW box as the 1.9 is a VW engine. Barry Quote
Guest SA Intruder Posted April 2, 2003 Report Posted April 2, 2003 1.9 is VW box. In 5 or 6 speed versions. Autos are Jatco on V6 and TDi (Japanese, very good track record) Fitted to Mazdas too, known to run to > 200k with only fluid/filter/screen changes Quote
Guest Geordie_Steve Posted April 4, 2003 Report Posted April 4, 2003 Dealer (Jennings Ford) reckons the selector has fallen out of the gear box, guess i'll be going back there very shortly. The car was taken in on wednesday morning, been told that it will be ready by monday at the earliest. I wouldn't recommend the dealer to anyone. I've got a JennCare Gold warranty which states i am entitled to a courtesy car, which they refused to give me because i didn't give them a weeks notice AND if the car if the car is going to take more than 24 hours to repair, i can hire a car up to the value of Quote
Dally Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 My 02 2.3 zetec used to pop out of gear and was difficult generally. It has almost been solved with adjustments by Ford. Just left with occasional difficulties with selection. Quote
