Tdi Owners - Stupid Question For You All

Just got my TDi yesterday and noticed tonight while intalling the new stereo that on the first click of the ignition key when the electrics are activated it sounds as though the engine fan comes on, its dark outside so im not getting my hands dirty tonight, but has anyone else noticed this happens on there TDi's also??? :huh:

Doubt that it's the rad cooling fans, more likely it's the auxilliary electric water pump that runs for about 5 minutes - usually after you switch the engine off.

that's a new one off a newbie TDI owner! it's usually what is the jet engine sound and why is there smoke pouring out from the car near the back wheel? :huh:

Funny though petrols still cheaper than the oil you burn :lol: :lol:

and just typical of a TDI owner! the fuel tanks in the middle not the rear! never mind hey! you guys never get that far back as you always seem to be under the bonnet replaceing the MAF sensor or checking your oil level every five minutes :lol: :lol:

It wasn't until I bought a diesel :lol:

Oil level? Wots that? I had a mate who had an oil leak and his philosophy was, as long as there's some coming out, then there some in there. He couldn't understand why his engine overheated and seized.

Parked my 99 tdi on friday.Went to Blackpool for the weekend (hire car),when i switched the ignition on Monday one of the rad fans started running.As the engine was stone cold i was a bit surprised to say the least.I have changed the Engine Coolant Temp Sensor and so far it hasnt happened again.Hope this helps u.Cheers

Maybe the same thing I noticed the other day, if you have the interior fan on and it is on air con or climate the fan on the rad kicks in.

If A/C is on and the fan is on at least pos 1 - the cooling fans will always run in slow mode to ensure adequate airflow for the a/c to work..

My rad fan has recently been kicking in when the engine is cold as some of you have described. It also continues to run for about 30secs after ignition off even if the engine is only started briefly. I suspected a faulty temp sensor but my temp guage functions normally and anyway i thought the fan operation was determined by the sensor in the middle of the upper rad hose, rather than the one by the engine block/thermostat housing.

 

Marty16610, which sensor did you change to fix your fan problem? Was it tricky/messy to do? How much was the new sensor?

 

Cold-starting has been a big problem for my gal recently. First i changed the battery - no improvement :huh: . Then i changed all the glow plugs (one was open-circuit) but still no improvement! :huh:

 

I now suspect a temp sensor problem because if the ECU thinks the engine is always warm due to a faulty sensor it might command an insufficient fuel volume for cold starting conditions? Anyone knowledgeable about such things care to comment?

 

Anyway, I'm taking it to a local garage later tomorrow for a fault code read-out so hopefully the fault will show up...

hitchhiker-I changed the coolant temp sensor (NOT the TEMP GAUGE SENDER).Its located in a plastic outlet on the upper face of the front of the block. Quite easy to do,if you disconnect the breather pipe that runs down the front of the block you can get to it easier.Disconnect wiring plug,remove securing clip and GENTLY pull sensor from housing.If you can insert new sensor as old one is removed you only loose a very small amount of coolant,otherwise drain down to below sensor level.Remember to renew sealing ring.This sensor also determines the glow plug preheat timing.Cost
