Dave-G Posted July 14, 2005 Report Posted July 14, 2005  It's frikkin dead :) Whilst driving in town this evening the engine "stopped" I was lucky enough to be able to freewheel to a layby - outside the local ford dealer of all places! The cambelt still looks intact - and was changed about three months ago It seems to be turning over normally Interestingly I have noticed what appears to be a diagnostic code shown by the drivers door led - with the ignition key turned to the on position It fashes rapidly at first - but after a couple of minites it changes to: 3 flashes - small gap - 1 flash - long gap Then repeat's this several times before showing nothing at all It's still dead at this moment, any ideas mateys? Dave-G Posted July 15, 2005 Author Report Posted July 15, 2005 Right... me bro ( passenger  )had AA cover but there was not an AA mechanic in leic's till 6Am so they sent someone else... who did'nt have any diagnostic kit He suspects fuel problem - sprays easy start into air inlet while I crank...it runs on it... no. 14 fuse blown (Fuel supply/engine management/AC) - and blows every time the ignition switch is turned on cant fix - and we're allready at a ford dealer so he shoots off In an attempt to isolate the problem I have disconected the lead from the AC compressor - wot's siezed up anyway (and the display flashes at start-up has done for a while now) and still it blows the fuses So It's looking like the fuel supply pump has shorted out... and we just KNOW that mr main dealer is going to be booked up for two weeks or so... now to try to find where it is! EDITIt's apparantly in the fuel tank - how do I depressurise, access and change it? Is there then any reactivation sequence to re-pressurise before starting? Further edit perhaps the pressurisation is only in the pipework after the fuel supply - as the fuel tank itself cant be pressurised I'm talking to myself here - 48 views but no replies... got to go move move it now Quote
Masked Marauder Posted July 15, 2005 Report Posted July 15, 2005 Is the fuse popping immediately or after a few seconds Dave? If immediate you are most likely looking for a short to ground. If slow then look for arcing relays or stuck pump etc. Quote
Dave-G Posted July 15, 2005 Author Report Posted July 15, 2005 Hi MM - Sorry mate I've been a bit busy on other things - and have'nt had time to further explore this - or reply to your own post regarding the "modern cavalier manners" of some drivers. Actually, thats not fair to cavaliers. You only have to give way to see just how few drivers even half-heartedly raise their hand as a gesture of thanks It's a sign of the times that some people are just too tied up in their lives to offer a word of thanks. As I write this I think of my first post - and those stalwarts who assisted me... A few shine out - and seem to answer almost every thread. For my part I rarely reply - which reflects how little I know about the subjects concerned I've just realised I'm replying to the wrong thread - but we know it's to the right guy and its my own thread I hijacked, so just keep up the good work mate To answer your question - the fuse pops immediatly power passes through it. I have recovered the car to my home and am contemplating removing the plug from the top of the tank sender/pump which has been costed to about Quote
seatkid Posted July 15, 2005 Report Posted July 15, 2005 Unless I'm wrong the fuel pump on the diesels is a mechanical one mounted on the engine - not electrical in the tank or otherwise - thats petrol. Think again. Quote
Guest ratherhaveanewone Posted July 15, 2005 Report Posted July 15, 2005 The diesel has a 'scavenger' fuel pump which has incorporated into it the fuel level sender unit - can remember exactly but its a Quote
Dave-G Posted July 15, 2005 Author Report Posted July 15, 2005 I've fed a direct 12v to the fuel supply pump and it pumps ok - but I cant get the car to start due to a flat battery, which I'm now going to charge up Quote
Dave-G Posted July 15, 2005 Author Report Posted July 15, 2005  I think I've dropped a dangly bit here - even though the pump was on direct feed, the engine management would'nt be working because it's on the same fuse - DOH  I'd like to disconnect the entire AC to try the fuse again - but wouldn't know where to start. Guess it's time to let myself get shafted Quote
