Guest Dave S Posted July 5, 2003 Report Posted July 5, 2003 I have a 1998 2.3 auto with 104k miles behind it. The gearbox has a whine through the gears, however in top it is a lot quieter but still there, is this normal? Also the owners manual says the 'box is sealed for life and doesn't require the oil replacing, but surely over time it breaks down or becomes contaminated, could this contribute to the whine? Has anybody performed an oil change? What Quote
Guest Pete C Posted July 6, 2003 Report Posted July 6, 2003 Haynes manual section 7B deals with auto box and gives details of fluid change so it is possible to do but it also states that the box is "filled for life" with no requirement for the fluid to be changed at regular intervals.......so you can do it but don't need to.As regards the procedure, a lot of weight is given to the fact that the temperature of the fluid needs to be between 35/45 centigrade for the levels to be checked correctly so is best left to the dealers or someone with access to a FDS200 tester.
