hello to one and all, a little help is needed if you may

my wife was driving the gal today when she experienced complete loss of power, rev counter needle would not gop above 1,000 rpm. also the coil shaped light started flashing at her, looked in handbook says we have a problem, anyway she said she pulled over turned the engine off waited then turned the engine back on, the light never came back on but car still felt sluggish, after driving for about 1 1/2 miles she said it felt liked she had been launched as the power returned, we have been having trouble with brake lights not blowing but not working, put this down to bulbs moving in holders,

any ideas, have done search on power loss but nothing with symptons like we have, replaced maf approx 3 months ago so cant be that.

we have a 1998 tdi 90bhp with approx 100000 miles on the clock,

thanks in advance

Brake light switch! sounds like it's on the way out!

If the switch goes faulty and jams "on", the ECU thinks that you are braking and disables the electronic throttle function - hence the engine would not rev over 1000 rpm. Does sound like brake switch problem.

Pretty straight forward job, although a bit awkward...and remember to get you tetanus jabs up to date as there are sharp bits under there and they bite !!!!!

Put brake light switch in you search and all will be revealed.

p.s When you get your switch ...dont be tempted to click it up and down as these are easily broken !!!
