Guest ajaycad Posted July 9, 2005 Report Posted July 9, 2005 I think I may have F****d up!!! Why didnt I read the flippin manual or this forum!!!. I changed my front pads and discs yesterday. I did it the way I always have and pushed the pistons back into the caliper to accomodate the new pads. I didnt open the bleed nipple or the reservior cap, and now I read that I could have damaged the ABS unit . Thing is I took the car for a run after and the brakes were very spongy and lacked the power of before. It almost feels like the brakes need bleeding, but I put it down to the pads and discs require bedding in. Whats wrong! Quote
seatkid Posted July 9, 2005 Report Posted July 9, 2005 If you changed discs and pads then did you make sure you cleaned the discs thoroughly with a solvent (brake cleaner)? There is a protective film of oil on the discs.... When you change discs and pads, not much bedding in is required. I would bleed the brakes if I were you, flush the crap out. Don't worry too much, the damage to the ABS unit is only theoretical. Quote
Guest ajaycad Posted July 9, 2005 Report Posted July 9, 2005 Thanks Seatkid, I did clean the oil off the rotors, it does fell like they need a bleed, but why? I didnt disconnect any pipelines, just pushed the fluid back up the line. I,m off to get one of those "free" brake checks I wonder what the will recommend I change eh!! Quote
Guest ajaycad Posted July 9, 2005 Report Posted July 9, 2005 Right just got back from my Free brake check. They reckon everything is OK. He did recommend that I change the rear discs, which to be fair he is right about. Mind you he must have gave then a right going over, cos there was smoke billowing out of the wheels...............not sure if that is "standard procedure"....at least my discs haven't warped..........I hope. Guest ajaycad Posted July 9, 2005 Report Posted July 9, 2005 Possibly, it could also be the fact that the pad compound is different, they are Mintex branded pads/discs. What do you reckon about the price to change the rears? Quote
seatkid Posted July 9, 2005 Report Posted July 9, 2005 Sounds dear, shop around. DIY shouldn't be difficult, (wind back tool required) Quote
Guest FlyingDutchMan Posted July 9, 2005 Report Posted July 9, 2005 Well, had the rear pads changed today which costed (incl. 'de-lipping' the discs) Quote
Guest ajaycad Posted July 9, 2005 Report Posted July 9, 2005 This price wasn't from a Ford garage...more like the local garage. I can get the pads/discs for about Quote
