I have a 2.0i Galaxy 1998 (S Reg) and when the wheels are on full lock at low speed there is a grinding, vibration noise from the PS. If you jack the car up you can feel vibration around the pump and the low pressure hose from the reservior. I ahve changed the belt, the tensioner is fine, and the pump does not feel tight and does not have a lot of end float. I am aware of the oscillation problem (TSB 1997/126) but as Ford want 93 pounds for the pipe alone I am reluctant to change it only to find it is the pump (can't beleive it is the rack as it happens when the car is jacked up). Has anyone any ideas?

If its only on full lock, its normal. Its the unloading valve. Youre not meant to hold it on full lock for long (max 30 sec otherwise you risk temp loss of power assistance)

Are you sure, the unloading valve never used to make that sort of noise, and it does sometimes happen when going from lock to lock, again only at low speeds.

The intermittent graunch/trumpeting sound as you turn towards full lock (always seems to occur at the same postion of lock and only as you move the steering wheel - usually when manouvering at slow speed i.e. significant load) is.... the oscillating pipe problem refered to on the TIS.

Blimey I've been blaming the kids for the "Trumpeting" sounds (and smells) :D

But why has this only just happened after 8 months of trouble free motoring? Is it heat related?

Who knows? :D On mine, its spasmodic, only occurs while manouvering at very slow speed (usually reversing), engine warm, only at one point on the right hand lock. Can go days without hearing it.

When I complained to dealer under warranty they couldnt find anything wrong :D

Maybe its something to do with the fluid (e.g. water content, and cavitation)
