OK this has me a little confused :o . I wanted to change the rather nasty looking transmission oil in my recently aquired Galaxy (95 Gal 2.8 auto). I warmed up the auto box, removed the plug, then the overflow pipe and about 1L of rather cooked ATF came out. replaced the overflow pipe, then put in 1L of ATF, I started to put in a second litre of fluid when I noticed fluid started comming out of the overflow pipe. So I started the engine (according to TIS the engine must be running to check the fluid level) and I put in another half litre before it started to pour out of the overflow.

 

I never expected to get the full 5L of fluid out of the box as much of it remains in the torque converter, however the manual and TIS states that it should take 3L if you drain it and refill, but mine only took 1.5L. To be honest looking at the size of the sump I don't think you could get 3L in there. Is this normal or have I done something wrong?

 

The box was working fine and still is, the old fluid was rather black so I decided to change it as a precaution.

I agree.

 

I had a Ford Escort, bought it new and kept it 14 years.

 

After 12 years old, the gears became very hard to change after driving for more than 5 or 6 miles. After a few weeks they jammed until the engine cooled for an hour or so.

 

I managed to syphon out about a litre of gearbox oil and added new. It was fine after that.

 

The car was in mint condition at 14 years old - why did I get rid? Fraud dealers totally messed it up at the MOT. It needed the battery tray replacing, which is a dashboard out job. When I collected it, my wife drove it home. She complained to me that it wouldn't go over 50MPH and wouldn't turn corners properly. In disbelief, I went for a drive. It wouldn't go over 50, and when I turned corners, if I were to "let go" of the steering it would carry on turning and not straigten up. Then I noticed the weld burns in the passenger footwell carpeting. I took it back, gave them a roasting, they fixed it up but by then they had ruined my "baby" and it wasn't my "new" pristine car anymore so I sold it for

In the end I took off the auto box sump, which contained a further litre of fluid. Cleaned and replaced the sump, put in the overflow tube and filled the gearbox. It took 2L of Fords special (expensive) oil before it started to come out of the overflow. Warmed the box up and removed the plug and oil dripped out of the overflow, so I'm guessing the box is full. I'm going to run it for a couple of weeks and then repeat the process.
