peteread Posted July 1, 2005 Report Posted July 1, 2005 Yes its that topic again. Had major hose burst a few weeks back, some of you might of read it, gearbox has developed a nasty gearchange from 2nd to 3rd. Just before it changes the revs it shoots upto 3750 to 4000 before actually engaging 3rd gear. No other problems. Now I was wandering if it is either not enough tran oil put in or too much because the guy that done it never took out the drain plug to see if the oil went over the overflow pipe. The car has done 500 miles since with no sign of this problem. I am hoping its not a sign of the gearbox going. Any ideas guys?By the way spent all day on internet looking for possible faults and looked through the forum, nothing...lol Quote
Masked Marauder Posted July 1, 2005 Report Posted July 1, 2005 Not enough oil I suspect, have it topped up properly. When the guy did it, did he just put some in or did he fill it like it was empty? Quote
peteread Posted July 1, 2005 Author Report Posted July 1, 2005 He put it in a though it was empty and then top it up by listening to it. I did ask how he could tell with which he replied 'by the sound'. Apparently he has done a motor apprenticeship wiv an enginnering company in London and spent a year on tranmissions alone. So I wasn't going to question him!! Quote

chromedome Posted July 1, 2005 Report Posted July 1, 2005 As far as I know, to check the oil level you need a diagnostics machine to make sure the fluid is at the correct temperature before checking the level. Quote
GSMGuy Posted July 2, 2005 Report Posted July 2, 2005 Sounds like slipping clutch packs to me m8.... Mike Quote
peteread Posted July 2, 2005 Author Report Posted July 2, 2005 So if my clutch packs are going are we talking major overhaul or can they just be replaced or can they be adjusted? Quote
seatkid Posted July 2, 2005 Report Posted July 2, 2005 Na, Put the correct amount of oil in......... As usual, there is insufficient detail about your car (i.e. exact year model ag4/ag5 transmission) to give further help. Does everyone think we're mind readers...... If you didn't get it earlier, the guy that topped up your box was a tosser. Quote

seatkid Posted July 2, 2005 Report Posted July 2, 2005 OK - engine tray off....... AG4 transmission - Procedure to check automatic transmission fluid level Note: Do not remove the overflow pipe. (The drain plug screws into this) Unscrew the drain plug. Bring the automatic transmission fluid to a test temperature of 35C to 45C. If automatic transmission fluid drips from the drain plug bore in the overflow pipe at the test temperature, the fluid level is correct. If necessary, top up with automatic transmission fluid until it starts coming out of the overflow pipe in the drain plug bore. Fit the drain plug using a new seal and tighten it. engine tray on..... Note: The transmission will not function properly if it does not contain the correct quantity of transmission fluid. The transmission fluid is added while the engine is running. Quote
Guest stevebm1 Posted July 2, 2005 Report Posted July 2, 2005 it would be great if someone would show photo's or pics of how to do this procedure Quote
peteread Posted July 9, 2005 Author Report Posted July 9, 2005 Just to let everyone know, took of drain plug and about a 1 1/2 litres tran oil came out, panic... took it for a spin, jumping in all the gears. So topped it up little by little and now back to where I started. Now someone tell me its the oil because it can't be unless I'm doing it wrong? Quote
seatkid Posted July 9, 2005 Report Posted July 9, 2005 Did you take out the overflow pipe as well? If not and 1.5 litres came out, then the box was well and truly overfilled and may have been damaged. Do you think the guy even used the correct fluid? All I can say is drain the box (remove overflow pipe) and refill with new fluid, though you won't be able to drain all the fluid....... Quote
Steven.Langdale Posted July 9, 2005 Report Posted July 9, 2005 Out of interest, how do you know when you have the fluid at the correct test temp of 35- 40deg without some diagnostic kit? Do you just run it for a bit and hope for the best? I'd like to check/change my fluid, I can't believe these things will last for life on the same fluid. Thanks Steven Quote
peteread Posted July 9, 2005 Author Report Posted July 9, 2005 Just wat I was thinking seatkid...I'm trying to determine whether there was damage when the pipes burst or whether by his incompetance of over filling.I think it is the latter because I have driven 500+ miles since it was refilled without any problems and the this slipping occured! Does anyone know what happens when an auto box is overfilled? What problems occur or can putting the oil level back to normal will eventually rectify the problem? Quote
peteread Posted July 13, 2005 Author Report Posted July 13, 2005 Update: Took out all the transmission oil, removed drain plug, guess what its broken, so I put 3lts back in, still the same.Going to get drain plug n do it all again, third time lucky...lol Quote
