I've had a manual Espace for the last few years but am thinking of changing over to a Galaxy, basically 'cos I need an MPV that the seats come out of! I'm going to see a '98 automatic with 51K on clock tomorrow up for 6500. Any feedback from you guys would be helpful.

Does this model have a cam belt or timing chain or both (I'm hopeless with motors :( !!) Whats the interval change for those parts? And cost?

Thanxin advance fellers, regards, martin.

Diesels have cam belt, the Ford 2.0 and 2.3 (and the VW-sourced 2.8) have chain-drive cams. Check for working aircon, no leaks under the front seats, regular servicing, all electrical items work etc etc.

AFAIK that engines' cambelt change interval was 60,000 but Ford now recommend 40,000 on the mk2 version as they were having failures before the 60,000 miles were up. Had mine done recently I think it was about

As with all automatics, check the gearbox thoroughly. All gears work correctly, smooth changes, at correct revs, kickdown working. If it has a towbar, be esp careful, knock some price off as Galaxy autos are prone to wear/break quickly.

I should take a stopwatch and time the 0 - 60. If its more than 25 secs, then the MAF is gone and you should knock another

And that price seems a bit steep to me, even for a low mileage, unless it is mint & with a Ford warranty.

Make sure it is a 110bhp engine, not the 90bhp.

Are you buying from a main dealer?

No, it's a private sale. I think it's a wrong'un anyway now. The service history was all at the same garage in Bromley and when I rang them they've never had the car in there! So, I think I'll give it a miss!!
