can any one help, i have got a galaxy 1.9 tdi x reg (facelift model) which has developed a missfire i can drive down themotorway at75 it will drop off speed to 60 i have to change down to fifth then it will speed up to 75 again and sit there no problem the miss is bad on tickover it seems as if it is only firing on 3 cylinders, i have had it into my ford dealer and there is no fault codes showing up, they wanted to take the gearbox out to inspect the dual mass flywheel for signs of wear(the flywheel costs

The flywheel wont make it misfire, when you say on the motorway the speed drops away to 60 do you mean the misfire is intermittent? If it is I would double check fuel supply, pumps filters etc, also check for water in the fuel filter.

Could this be our old enemy, the MAF?

when you say maf is it the air flow meter you are on about? just it is not giving the same symptons as when they are faulty ie-: total lack of power this is a definite missfire as if an injector has gone off cheers MICK

It could well be the injector as they are fancy double spring jobbies and have five very fine injection holes to block up.

First though you would have to find which one it is.....

I would check the wiring to the injectors for damage.......

This may be symptomatic of a PD engine which has been run on the wrong oil (worn injector pumps / cam shaft)

I agree, I had not noticed this is a PD engine and now you have pointed it out then that certainly sounds the likely cause. And about the mileage of others having the same problems.

the oil that i have been using is 10/40w semi synthetic, the dealer recommends 15/40 mineral oil so the grade i have been using is better than they say.is this a common fault on the high milers? as ford say there is no known probs. i am going to book it into another ford dealer for a second oppinion as there is no one else in my area that deals with this type of fuel system unless any one could recommend somewhere? i live in sunderland and thanks to you all for the advice cheers MICK

For PD engines, Oil must meet spec VW505.01 or VW506.01

The ".01" is the important bit - oil specially designed for PD engines, in particular to protect the unit injectors and camshaft from premature wear.

VW505.00 is not suitable, semi or full synthetic.....

If you read this forum a lot you will be aware of the ignorance of many dealers and "service centres" regarding this issue.

506.01 is not suitable for an X-reg either; must be 505.01 (I have spoken to Castrol on this one !)

There are problems with the Dual mass flywheel and the main symptoms are lumpy tickover.

When these eventually fail they can catch fire due to them fouling on the bell housing.

Unfortunatly the garage could be right :(

I agree with you guys...It's the fuel system.

The dealer network is hopeless, take it to an independant diesel specialist. They can run the necessary tests, and they're a lot cheaper and better at what they do.

They can often rebuild your pump etc. The dealer would just order a new one!

The oil grade used on PD engines is absolutely critical due to the very high shear loads imposed by the PD camshaft system, much higher than an ordinary camshaft and tappets.

At that mileage I would expect a lot of wear on the PD system even if the wrong oil has been used only briefly.

As an aside there is still no substitute for good ol' castor oil when it comes to film strength and shear resistance! That's not a recommendation tho' :(

...try these guys near you:

thanks again for the replies i will try TA flavel see what they say, does any one know where there is any pictures of the engine inside the rocker cover so i can have a look to see if it is much of a job to take the injectors out? as the haynes manual only covers the old type engine i am pretty good with cars and would not be put off to do the job but i know that the fuel system needs the pressure releasing before i touch the injectors because of the high pressure, i forgot to mention that it is only the 90 bhp engine and vw said that it is only the 130 bhp that uses the speacial oil were they wrong in the ford hand book it says 5/30w or 10/40w cheers MICK

Best get the engine number, BTW IIRC dual mass flywheel was only fitted to 110 bhp for a short while - or maybe am I wrong?
