Stereo Fault

Hi All

 

My 51 Plate MK11 has suddenly developed a buzzing sound from the OSR Door speaker - and after fiddling about a bit I discovered that I have lost the right hadn channel altogether. I have the feeling it is a fault in the speaker - but am not sure how to check. How do you get to the speaker - I can't see any way of getting it off without damaging the door panel. Any advice gratefully received!

If you rip the grill off you should see four screws holding the speaker. If you are lucky there may be enough cable slack to remove the speaker plug. You will need a new grill though, and IIRC these are about

How to remove the door cards...

 

You are best finding out if it is the wiring that's gone or the speaker its self, obviously, the wiring being a cheaper fix than a new speaker.

Ooop's, :blink: forgot to mention an important bit, on the MKII, you cannot remove just the speaker cover, you HAVE TO remove the whole door card. <_< :angry:

...and if you have lost the right-hand channel completely, it may be an amplifier problem within the head unit; can you remove it from the dash and wire up a temporary connection to a spare speaker that you may have lying around somewhere to test it?

Be careful, because if the amp has gone, it may blow the speaker up <_>

 

Have had this on a domestic hifi unit. Had to get both speakers repaired and bought a new o/p transistor stage for the amp. It lasted about another 7 years then did it again. This time I didn't bother re-testing the channel. I just binned the amp and bought a new one (and used a spare pair of speakers; anyone need one speaker ? :angry: ).

your storey reminds me of a 5.1 surround sound system i bought, slowly, the rear speakers stopped working, making more and more hiss/crackling, as they packed in, i don't know what happened, as i had only had it 3 months, took it back to the shop (where they tried there up most to not change it <_< ) and managed to get a Sony all-in-one system, which ime am very happy with.

 

remember, the wires could be broken anywhere along the line, it could be the speaker, might be the head unit, might be, just a poor connection somewhere, or maybe it got unplugged some where.

 

More often the wiring loom can be damaged by the window regulator if it comes adrift, you may well have this problem since it sounds like the speakers been earthing out (buzzing) as the wire has been chafed in which case you can repair the loom when the door card's off.

 

although i agree, that earthing could cause buzzing. but, when i replaced my speakers, the wire was only just long enough to reach the speaker, and was no where near the running gear for the window.

 

That's another thing, if it is the speaker, and you buy another one. DONT TRY TO BEND A PIECE OF BLACK METAL, AS THIS IS A RUNNER FOR THE WINDOW. (THATS IF THE SPEAKER IS TOO DEEP.)
