I have just purchased a 2002 2.3 Ghia 5 speed manual with 11k on the clock,

and when driving I can hear a rattle/rumble from the front of the car when applying the gas or when I lift off the gas pedal (in all gears).

When the car is started up I hear it then as well, (but not if the cluth pedal is depressed). Took the car back to local dealer who said this is normal, and it is noise coming up the cluth cable(s) form the gearbox, and is not a problem as it normal on Galaxy's (said it was louder on the mark1's).

Could anyone confirm this as it is v offputting.

B--------cks no sound problems on the mk 1s

Sound like it needs to be looked at whilst still got warranty etc

Obviously the garage wants to get out of it

Agreed - it's definitely not normal and should be investigated/fixed.

Good luck.

Point one....there is no clutch cable. It's hydraulic.

If the noise disappears when the clutch is disengaged (i.e. depressed), it ain't the thrust release bearing. If is was, this would scream under pressure.

It will be the gearbox input shaft bearing. You need a new box.

No idler gear - two shaft box, contra-rotating.

He's got movement on one or both shafts when loaded on or off throttle. Hence the noise. Could also be diff bearings. Cause - abuse/manuf defect/low oil?

He could have excess endfloat or chipped gears, but my bet is on the first bearing..it is a taper bearing

The only allowable noise on these is a roughness at 2500-3500 rpm, which is not his problem.
