Might not be this but you never know....

TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN No.126/1997

Car and Light/Medium Commercial 04.06.1997

Section: 13

Model: Galaxy LHD only built from 09/95 (build code SJ) onwards

Markets: All except United Kingdom/Eire

Subject: Power steering noise whilst manoeuvrering at slow speeds

Service Instruction

Should a customer express concern over noises from the power assisted steering whilst manoeuvrering at slow speeds (eg whilst parking in confined spaces), it is possible for fluctuations in fluid pressure to cause the high-pressure pipe to oscillate, resulting in a `trumpeting' type noise. This can be resolved by removing the high pressure pipe (refer to the Galaxy Service Microfiche, Operation Number 13 442 0) and installing a revised pipe (see Parts Required).

NOTE:

The new high-pressure pipe must be installed so that it does not touch other components such as heat shields, cross members, air conditioning pipes or the steering gear.

Mine has always done it - dealers didn't have a clue when I complained - learnt to live with it.

I should have added that the drive belt is getting wrecked after a couple of weeks - 1500 to 2000 miles

New pump - new rack - just the pipes left?

Are you sure its not just the tensioner? They seize/fall to bits etc. would cause belt wear and intermittent drive (vibration)

I would assume that they have checked the tensioner

I think I'll try another Ford garage and see what they can do.

Thanks for the advice

... the drive belt is getting wrecked after a couple of weeks - 1500 to 2000 miles

So it's one of the other pulleys that the drive belt passes over, and the vibration from that is causing "oscillations" in the PAS pump. How's the aircon? Compressor working OK? Does the belt also turn the water pump? Any signs of oil leaks etc around any of the pulleys round which the drive belt passes?
