Dave-G Posted June 10, 2005 Report Posted June 10, 2005 Kinel! I've had an annoying rattle on/near the engine for a few days and couldnt locate it this evening it got a bit more noticeable then I saw smoke wafting up from the off side wheel area (when I pulled up to investigate) and smelt a "clutch type" burning opened bonnet and a lil smoke was coming from the AC compressor and there seemed to be some melted rubber sticking out from it The burning smell and rattle then stopped (engine still running) Late last year I took the car for a gas top up "to see it through"and recall he said he'd overfilled it and took some out again straightaway. lately when I've tried the AC it aint worked...in fact in the heatwave we had about 2 weeks ago it blew warmer than the outside temperature! should we be able to turn the clutch inside the pulley by hand? it seems quite loose if i tap the plates (yip the rattle sounded like that) but i cant rotate it If the clutch is knacked and as expensive as I think, I'd rather part ex the car and hope the new owner buys it with a warranty  what ya think? :( Quote

jkspoff Posted June 10, 2005 Report Posted June 10, 2005 I had axactly the same noises etc on mine last weekend, garage diagnosed a new compressor: Quote
seatkid Posted June 10, 2005 Report Posted June 10, 2005 Looks like the e/m clutch has been slipping, either the compressor has seized or is seizing (lack of lubricant?) or your system was overfilled. Anyway the clutch is now worn out (hence the rattling). The good news is the clutch can be replaced, the bad news is the compressor is probably seized as you should be able to spin the clutch by hand with just a little resistance from the "compression". Or it could be over filled. I'm seeing quite a few galaxies on secondhand forecourts with "sold as seen" on them. I wonder why? Quote
Rallim Posted June 10, 2005 Report Posted June 10, 2005 I get the impression from this and other threads that you are doing well to have an a/c compressor last longer than 4-5years... the 1 year warranty I got with mine runs out at the end of the month... and it fills me with dread... my Sharan the ticking time bomb of cost! Gordon.
