BULLTERRIER Posted June 8, 2005 Report Posted June 8, 2005 can any one help me ?i am not too blessed in the mechanical sense but have had problems with my manual galaxy i can only engage third and fourth gears i managed to locate that it was a ball joint on the cable that had slipped out i managed to put that back in(what a cow son of a job !)unfortunately it only lasted three days before popping out again(thankfully have not re-assembled everything inside the car yet!)obviously after reading previous posts it looks like the only option is to replace the cabledoes anyone know either a part number for this cable or the exact name of what it is called ?thanks in advance Quote

nogdog Posted June 2, 2007 Report Posted June 2, 2007 Can anyone help me. I have the same problem on my 1998 TDi. On the way home tonight the gear selection went veru odd. All of a sudden I coul donly get 1st & 2nd then after a bit of rocking I got 3rd and 4th. but now cannot get 1st and 2nd at all. I had a look through the forum and it all apears to point to the ball joints. I have just been under the car and it all looks ok and the ball joints are all on. Had the wife run the gears and it is defo on but not moving. The gear selection makes an odd scrape / creeking noise when going int 3rd and 4th though. I have some play in the selection joing where I can make the stick waggle from under the car but not operate by hand. Can anyone help with advise? I'm dreading having to pull the box off just to checki it over tomorrow. Cheers Quote
nogdog Posted June 2, 2007 Report Posted June 2, 2007 After a little more digging I just found another user with exactly the same problem. The answer looks like I need to take the box out. The answe rwas on this thread, http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.ph...rt=#entry102711 Can anyone tell me if the box is now diff if this little bolt has sheared or if I can fix it myself with a tap and new bolt? Bigjeeze Posted November 17, 2011 Report Posted November 17, 2011 [ thats what I did to mine and I have driven a couple of thousand miles like thiswiyh lots of gear changes (Taxi Driver). No probs.Ran a cable tie thru a bolt hole on the battery tray and onto the gear cable.Am promising myself putting a new cable on will not go onto the long finger I did this too still ok after 2 years regular driving  This is fine I am sure - if it's you driving the car - Mine is my wife's car and she whilst OK at mechanics would not be able to replace the ball joint with or without a cable tie in an on road breakdown scenario. I work on the basis that I would prefer to know it is reliable and safe than run the risk of it breaking in the wrong place. That said -it's always good to know there is a get you home fix. Quote
Simon Burke Posted February 21, 2012 Report Posted February 21, 2012 I have a '98 Alhambra 110TDi.....I had the same kind of problem, but one added one... Where the cables join onto the top of the gearbox, that had split, so I could get no gears at all....So, I removed the battery, the plastic holder for the coolant bottle and the fuel filter... With these things moved out of the way, I could see right into the place I needed.... I used a load of jubilee clips to hold the big black plastic sections to the metal frame attached to the gearbox.. So, when someone is in the car, they can change gears and I can see whats happening.. No slop at all.... Oh, and where the ball joint clicks in.... If you put a jubilee clip either side of the rubber wheel and put it over the flat plastic piece that clicks into the balljoint, that will be a permenant fix.... Gearchanges will be a little bit stiffer, but all gears are accessable... Hope this helps someone..S.. Quote
