chromedome Posted June 7, 2005 Report Posted June 7, 2005 Hi I have a used car warranty which specifies all suspension parts, except bushes are covered. So, I booked the car in to have the front drop links replaced as they were knocking only to be told they are not covered by the warranty. Am I correct in thinking that the drop links are a suspension part and not a bush? I look forward to your comments so I can take the matter up with the dealer. The A/C is leaking from the compressor, hopefully this is covered by the warranty as well as the exceptions here are pipework. The dealer seems to think that it is covered but I'll find out tomorrow. seatkid Posted June 7, 2005 Report Posted June 7, 2005 the thing that wears in the arb link is the bush. Sounds like this warranty is basically "all parts except those parts that wear" which for suspensions means it is more or less worthless. You can DIY both arb links for about Quote
chromedome Posted June 8, 2005 Author Report Posted June 8, 2005 No a/c parts covered by the warranty as the car has done over 40k. They don't tell you all this when you buy the warranty. Anyway, they think it may be the "O" rings. Waiting to hear the news. Quote
seatkid Posted June 8, 2005 Report Posted June 8, 2005 Looks like your warranty is a worthless load of tosh..... Quote
chromedome Posted June 8, 2005 Author Report Posted June 8, 2005 A/C problem was the "O" rings. Took the wife with me and she had a moan about the warranty, or lack of it. They explained the conditions of the warranty, which basically covers major stuff, however, because it wasn't made clear at the time I purchased it they have waived all charges. :) So I'm very happy. Andrew T Posted June 8, 2005 Report Posted June 8, 2005 Nice result. Sounds like what you were given Mechanical Breakdown Insurance rather than a warranty, however all traders are supposed to give 90 Days cover from date of sale. Quote
Nick Posted June 12, 2005 Report Posted June 12, 2005 What does the sound of worn drop links sound like? I've got a rattle/knock that I can't find on mine and it's driving my wacko! Quote

Its a rattle/knock that u can't find and it drives u wacko! Sounds really bad over uneven roads and speed bumps..... Quote
Rallim Posted June 12, 2005 Report Posted June 12, 2005 In my expierience of worn drop links, consisting of an Audi 80 (2 sets) and the Sharan (2 sets) they clank / knock, and unlike other noises you get in the cars it does sound like its coming from the front suspension. Uneven / pot holy roads really makes the noise apparent. To test them raise the front wheels off the road and push and pull the drop link, if it clicks and you feel it move slightly they are worn. Gordon. Quote
chromedome Posted June 12, 2005 Author Report Posted June 12, 2005 I agree with the descriptions given. Been out on a good old country road today and I always thought it was my mudflaps scraping on the ground. Since the new drop links....... nothing. Quote
Nick Posted June 12, 2005 Report Posted June 12, 2005 Thanks for the feedback. I've been thinking it was a broken pipe, like an a/c pipe clip busted or something. Since most of the roads in the UK are crap the noise is there almost all the time!Is the drop link also known as a connecting link that attaches to the stabaliser bar? I'm looking on my TISLooks like a straight forward job. Did you DIY chromedome? Quote
Rallim Posted June 12, 2005 Report Posted June 12, 2005 I DIY'd my Audi 80; the job looks the same for the Sharan / Galaxy. Front wheels off, undo the 2 bolts (you need to use an open ended spanner on the ball joint part of the link to stop it rotating whilst undoing the nuts). It is wise to replace the self locking nuts (new oners were not supplied with the new links, but that was GSF a dealer might.. B) ) Hope that helps... its certainly a lot easier than changing strut top mounts, but that's a different story... Gordon. Quote

Guest gritrash Posted June 24, 2005 Report Posted June 24, 2005 sounds like mine have gone at 19k miles. Does that seem about the right level of sh1t quality? Plenty of posts about the short life of drop links, so just checking.19k - barely run-in, what a load of pants. Quote
Rallim Posted June 24, 2005 Report Posted June 24, 2005 When I bought my Sharan 1 year ago I started to hear the dreaded 'clunks' after 1 week of ownership. Arnold Clark (who I bought the car off) replaced them, they lasted for 6 months (about 5000miles!) before the noise returned. I got VW to replace them this time when they replaced the turbo (all at Arnold Clarks expense :D ). I had similar life span from the set I bought from GSF for my Audi 80, I returned them as it considered the life span unacceptable, however, it may be par for the course if you use OEM... which is what I guess Arnold Clark used when they first replaced them but I could be wrong :) Gordon. seatkid Posted June 25, 2005 Report Posted June 25, 2005 I think you mean "aftermarket" rather than OEM. OEM is "original equipment manufacturer" - should be as good as VAG original. Quote
Rallim Posted June 25, 2005 Report Posted June 25, 2005 Yep sorry, your right, I meant 'aftermarket' instead of OEM. :) Gordon Quote
