Hi,

Bought my Galaxy with 14,670 Miles on the clock, 1 only lady owner before. But on taking the Galaxy in for her 20,000 Mile service I am informed and shown that the Front Brake Discs are worn! The garage owner tells me they find this alot with new cars today, it's because the Disc Pads are too hard and wear the Discs out in no time at all. Anyone else had the same problem or has this never been a problem?

Discs do wear but I would expect two pad changes before the disc is at the limit.

If the discs are worn out, this is potentially an indication that the car has been clocked and/or the history is suspect.

Ask them for the disc thickness measurement or get a second opinion from another garage or even a kwik fit place.

Bad-braking can use them up too. Going from 70-0 in one motion, without coming off for a second to allow cooling inbetween changedown/not using engine braking is bad news for the discs. Apart from warping, the disc gets stupidly hot and this increases surface wear, as the metal is closer to its liquid state than before.

Progressive breaking has shown its worth on my car. In 23 thousand miles, my discs still havent lost more than half a mil each side. Whereas my brother brakes late and hard and im sure will chew through his discs in no time.

Before they changed the makeup of the pads, to remove asbestos, I got nearly 90,000 from a set of disks on the front - now I'm lucky to get 50,000. Yours does seem high though.

If it's an auto you could probably expect to change them at 30/40k

I am on my second set @ 40+k.

I suspect the discs are now a mere mild steel (whereas they may have been hardened in the distant past )

They're a doddle to change, you dont need to take this type off with the wheel bearings

some people use the claim "1 lady owner" to help the sale of a car
