While having a new tyre fitted recently I asked the chap to put in 40 PSI. He said that I shouldn't be putting in more than 36 PSI maximum. Can anyone advise. Quote
Velcrohead Posted June 6, 2005 Report Posted June 6, 2005 On the back page of my owners manual it states that the fronts should be 34psi and the rears 31 psi unloaded and loaded should be 37 psi front and 40 psi for the rear. Quote

dipsomaniac Posted June 7, 2005 Author Report Posted June 7, 2005 Just had a look behind my petrol flap (spend a lot of time with it open but have never read the chart). The pressures quoted 33/30 are for 215/60 R15. Mine are 215/55 R16. Thought I would check the owners guide. 215/60 R15 (they don't quote for 215/55 R16) it says 34/31 - different to what is on the petrol flap for up to half load??? Had to laugh as the owners guide also advises on tyre pressure for continued driving at high speeds - it says 'for every 6mph over 118 mph add 3 PSi. Can anyone please confirm whether the pressures should be higher for 215/55 R16 than 215/60 R15. Thanks Quote

I figured that the 2.8 lump needed at least 40 PSI and I didn't want to be running the backs much lower. Don't know whether it is because the sun is shining but it does seem to handle a bit better. Velcrohead Posted June 7, 2005 Report Posted June 7, 2005 Tyre pressures for these size tyres does seem a bit strange.My book has it written on the back by the dealer as 34f and 31r unloaded.But the higher pressures do make sense.It's ahrd to know what to inflate them to really but I might inflate to the higher pressures as looking at mine they seem maybe a little bit flat. Andrew T Posted June 8, 2005 Report Posted June 8, 2005 I find this huge range of pressures quoted by Ford most odd, although the high pressures are consistant with the sort of pressures medium size vans require. Finding an airline capable of delivering that sort of pressure can be a problem, the ones at supermarkets which appear to have an internal compressor in their cabinet take several minutes to show 50 PSI, and then you find your own gauge only shows 38. Best are the ones that work off a garages compressed air system and only take a few seconds to deliver a genuine 50PSI. Quote

davewill Posted June 8, 2005 Report Posted June 8, 2005 When i first got my Gal, the garage put two new front tyres on and they were at 32psiI didn't change these, and they basically were worn out at 10k miles I now run 38psi all round, and find this the right pressure for ride comfort, handling etc Quote
