Where Are My Gears?

Hi Peeps :)

 

I am it appears, the latest victim of the disappearing Gears . My wife's 97 TDI suddenley lost 1st 2nd,5th and reverse. I remembered reading about this and so did a search and came across lots of useful information. I managed to get my hands to the troubled area and to put the cable back on the ball joint end.

 

What I want to know is that despite reading all the posts about ingenious repairs, albeit temporary; Is the wear on the cables, or on the ball on the Gear box.

 

So, do I just buy new cables - and spend four hours fitting or do I need to develop freaky arms to replace the slector on the gearbox.?

 

Any advice gratefully received. <_>
