Hi,

I've been having some strange and sometimes noisy and jerky gearchanges and from my 98 Sharan VR6 and I reckon it could be short of transmission fluid.

My reasoning is this:

Having looked at most of the posts about auto box prob's it seem as though being short of fluid can cause these problems.

I jacked up the rear wheels to sort out a sticking handbrake cable and when I lowered the car to the ground and started it up, the box made a right racket but when i drove it onto a level surface it was alright again.

My problem is that according to several posts the gearbox is 'sealed for life' and therefore you cannot top up the fluid, but in the haynes manual ti tells you how to top up the fluid.

Does anyone know for sure if the fluid can be topped up and what problems can you get if you overfill?

You can check and top up the fluid if you need to? hit the search button as there is a description of how to do it with a picture (if its still there?) of the filling and drain points

I thought auto gear boxes had to have an oil change every few years (every three engine oil changes??)

Have you got any more details of the car/transmission? Year, Engine size, number of gears.

Hi,

Thanks for the link.

My Car is a 1998 Sharan VR6 2.8.

Not sure what the box is or how many gears???

Pop out to Halfords and get a Haynes manual, there are diagrams showing the filling and level plugs

I'm getting the local garage to check the gearbox fluid level for me tomorrow now as I'm running out of time before going on hols on Saturday.

Does it sound as though it is the fluid level that would casue the gearbox to be really noisy after being jacked up at the rear but then return to normal on the flat???

Thanks

Mike
