maghouse Posted May 27, 2005 Report Posted May 27, 2005 Hi guys, anyone come across an oil leak like this before - engine VR6 1997.I have an oil leak near the blukhead that appears to be coming from just under the air filter/intake tube just above the exhaust manifold. The oil is old and cajouled, not fresh - looks like it has accumulated over a period of time - now seems to be dripping onto thr exhaust manifold with the resultant smell & a little bit of smoke.Cant quite make out what the sensor is at one end of the concetina hose but this seems to be where it is originating from ?Any ideas ?ThanksRob Quote
maghouse Posted May 27, 2005 Author Report Posted May 27, 2005 Guys - photo number 2 - close up of the concertina hose. Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted May 27, 2005 Report Posted May 27, 2005 Any chance of a picture of the sensor and the over all position its in? could you pan out a bit and show a wider area? because I have an idea of the part your on about but cant be sure due to the extreme close up  Quote
GSMGuy Posted May 27, 2005 Report Posted May 27, 2005 Sure it's not a crack in one of the folds on the concertina hose? Mike Quote
maghouse Posted May 27, 2005 Author Report Posted May 27, 2005 Yep will do - will post photo tomorrow - I have a feeling it is some sort of breather for the cylinder head but not sure why there are sensors ???Thanks guys ...Rob Quote
maghouse Posted May 27, 2005 Author Report Posted May 27, 2005 But there again - wonders of the flash !!! Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted May 28, 2005 Report Posted May 28, 2005 http://www.kiter.plus.com/images/eng.JPG this bit of kit, it's a flame trap IIRC? the sensor on it? no idea what its for! the pipe work and the valve are known to fail! it's one way valve, it vents the crank case fumes into the inlet manifold and in the case of a back fire it seals and doesnt let exploding gases into the engine! mines held together with a couple of self tappers  the hose and valve are available from Ford or VW Ford part no:3A0129615 part description: hose complete with valve VW part numberHose 021 103 493 A Connector 021 103 687 not sure on the prices as a few prices are bandied around! from Quote
maghouse Posted May 28, 2005 Author Report Posted May 28, 2005 Many thanks for that - that seems to be the right part now I have had agood look in daylight !This appears to be a simple ( ) fit - screw hose clip on the rocker cover end - but how is the hose fitted to the intake manifold hose (from the air filter) ?One last question please ... the oil appears to have been spread onto the air filter hose manifold end - is this venting under pressure ? ie. would it "spray" oil out of the hose rather than just drip ?Thanks againRob Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted May 28, 2005 Report Posted May 28, 2005 IIRC the hose plugs into the air intake hose, the oil spray/mist will be vented under some pressure but nothing to much! there are a lot of moving parts under the cam cover so the oil gets thrown about a bit so some is bound is get through the hose and will leak out any holes in the pipe work! dipsomaniac Posted May 29, 2005 Report Posted May 29, 2005 Can you let us know if you solve the problem maghouse. I noticed some oil on my main air intake hose and didn't think much of it until the hose came off the throttle body one evening. When working on the air intake hose I would just check that it is secure on the throttle body - just in case. I ended up with an blocked injector that wouldn't spray. Cost me a fortune. Quote
maghouse Posted May 29, 2005 Author Report Posted May 29, 2005 Thanks for the info "vr6galaxy" The info I now have seems to agree with that, the hose should just fit onto the air intake, you are no doubt right about the slight pressure & spraying of oil - all makes sense.Diposmaniac - will let you know how I get on - might be not for a week or so .. little bit concerned about your comments on the throttle housing ? hopefully I should not have to go there - the replacement hose should just fit onto the air intake hose and not have to touch the throttle housing (I hope !)Rob Quote
dipsomaniac Posted May 29, 2005 Report Posted May 29, 2005 Due to the fact that everything you seem to do on the V®6 requires you to remove the air filter I think the jubilee type clip which attaches the air intake hose to the throttle body had worked loose whilst replacing water pump, plugs, leads and belt tensioner over a 6 month period. maghouse Posted October 17, 2005 Author Report Posted October 17, 2005 Hi Guys, having finally got my act together - I have bought the offending pipe ( Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted October 17, 2005 Report Posted October 17, 2005 If it's a rectangular plug with two cables then it's nothing to do with our engine  it's a sensor thats fitted on other models, over sea's etc the connector you have found on the pipe is just a holder for the plug to stop it rattleing around! I cut mine off and blanked off the cables Quote
maghouse Posted October 17, 2005 Author Report Posted October 17, 2005 As ever oh great vr6galaxy man - you are spot on, that makes perfect sense, describes exactly what I have  I feel so much happier now so will let you know how I get on ... just hope the valve is okay and does not need replacing as well !Thanks again  Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted October 17, 2005 Report Posted October 17, 2005 Tell me next week  off line for a few days! off to the big apple NY, credit cards cleared, 2K+ in cash and I'm not bringing a penny/cent back  morgage what morgage? Quote
