Guest MATT Posted May 23, 2005 Report Posted May 23, 2005 Hi, While driving today, i was going up a hill, doing 28mph, when it changed down a gear (remember its an auto <_< ) and the gear change was a real jerk :o , as though it had let the clutch in too quickly ;) , that's if you were in a manual. Is this an indication of failure? :( MATT ;) Quote
MrT Posted May 23, 2005 Report Posted May 23, 2005 I had these few and far between no idea why, but never happens again for 6 months or so, then happens once. Quote
Guest MATT Posted May 23, 2005 Report Posted May 23, 2005 seems strange, ime worrying (yet again) that my auto box is going to pack in! MATT Quote
Guest V6 Owner (George) Posted May 23, 2005 Report Posted May 23, 2005 Mmmm, i would be tempted to have this checked out by a garage, better to be safe than sorry, never had this experience before as this car ariving soon will be my first automatic, sorry. George Quote
Guest MATT Posted May 23, 2005 Report Posted May 23, 2005 Mmmm, i would be tempted to have this checked out by a garage, ...That also bothers me, it will go in, and they will either break something  , or say i need to pay a lot of money <_< , and they will throw in crushed sills, free of charge :( . MATT ;) Quote
Guest V6 Owner (George) Posted May 24, 2005 Report Posted May 24, 2005 From experience it is most likely to be paying a lot of money and getting free crushed sills & then they will probably break something anyway, that is usually the case. I think once, i ended up going back to the Ford garage about 4 or 5 times before they finally fixed the problem with the remote locking, alarm and imobiliser on my Ford Galaxy. George Quote

Guest MATT Posted May 25, 2005 Report Posted May 25, 2005 i think i will just have to wait and see if it does it again, and if so, how often. matt :( Quote
dipsomaniac Posted May 26, 2005 Report Posted May 26, 2005 Have you had the gearbox serviced recently Matt? If not, I would take it too a good autobox specialist to have the oil/filter changed, any fault codes read and a test drive. Will cost under Quote
GSMGuy Posted May 26, 2005 Report Posted May 26, 2005 Oil level is critical, however, these boxes are supposed to be sealed for life so unless you have a leak... Matt, I had this on mine before it got rebuilt, apparently it's the result of an ambiguous (?) signal from the gear monitoring sensor.. Either the sensor is on it's way, or it could be a loose/dirty connection... Mine was back in yesterday (foc) and had a complete new valve chest fitted (under the black steel cover on the front of the box) TBH, I didn't realise just how complex these Jatco's are... The valve chest is the size of a very large hardback book - anout 14"x10"x4" and has 11 solenoids fitted to it, 7 sensors and 2 dozen or so valves!! I was able to watch them test the rebuilt one on their test rig before fitting, and it's awesome... They plumb it all up under the shield, and then a PC runs it through all of the cycles and gear changes, checking all the change pressures and sensor signals... They also have a massive test rig where they run the full rebuild box and Torque Converter in the same way prior to refitting... Amazing stuff.. Anyway, If I were you, I'd take out the battery & tray and double check all connections... as the gear monitoring sensor is one of ony 4 that cannot be changed with the box in situ, it has to come out... Needless to say, on mine they replaced all inaccessible sensors as a matter of course when the box was in bits.. HTH Mike Quote
Guest MATT Posted May 26, 2005 Report Posted May 26, 2005 The car was last serviced at 23/7/04, and had done 24,119 miles, it has now done 33,000 (Off the top of my head). in the warranty and service guide i quote,Automatic Transmission - check/top up fluid level of gearbox and final drive, galaxy only (every 40 000 miles) Could this 'mileage' of been 'accelerated' by towing caravans? meaning that it needs checking now instead of later. Guest MATT Posted May 26, 2005 Report Posted May 26, 2005 does anyone know if a 2001 automatic ford galaxy, comes with a oil cooler for the auto box? i need a second opinion, because i have spoken to a ford mechanic who says i don't need one, but on my old ford granada, i had to have one fitted. MATT Quote
GSMGuy Posted May 26, 2005 Report Posted May 26, 2005 It doesn't have one in the sense of a traditional fluid to air cooler - it has a fluid to coolant one, as per this pic... It's item No 1.. Mike Quote
