My Tomtom is running on a Dell Axim X5 PDA which is 400mhz but as yours is dedicated and optimized purely to the Navman GPS software it may well run quicker than Tomtom on my PDA so you might be able to run more POI layers before any noticable slowdown. (blimey that was a long sentence, I think I need a lie down now :( )

i will have to try it out, i also thought that, on the navman settings, you can 'de-activate' POI's, does this mean that it wont bother with it, unless its active (the POI i mean)

Not sure if it's the same on Navman but on Tomtom you can have loads of POI's installed but it's only when you activate them that it slows things down. On Tomtom you can activate individual layers (i.e. Car Park layer, Petrol Station layer etc), I guess thats the same with Navman.

I think its the same, so i will load the ones that i might need, but only activate them, when i need a Mc Donalds or whatever - thanks HJT.

just a quick question, when entering a location into a tomtom (or any other device) how much information do you enter, like, postcode, street, house number, ect. I am still learning how to use this navigator correctly, and there have been some Oh's and Ahr's as ive discovered more and more about it.

I have found (unless its me) that the post code alone, does not always get you to the point you want, but if you enter,

Country (uk - for now)

Region (England)

postcode,

town,

street,

House number,

With Tomtom it depends how you are doing it. With the UK Postcode software you just start up UK Postcode, type in the postcode, hit "Navigate to" and the program starts Tomtom and calculates the route.

If you are just using Tomtom then you go "Navigate to" then you have various options like "Home" which is the first entry in your "Favourites" list, "Address" (which is where you go through the various screens for "City", "Street", "House Number", etc), "Recent Location", "Favourites", "POI" and "Itinery Destination".

A 4 digit postcode will only get you to the area.

Yes its got favourites, which i have saved various addresses, like 'home', and all those which you have explained above. its just that as ever the manual is not clear :( on what information you have to have and also what the info will do, like you have just told me that a 4 digit postcode will only get you to the area - which has made things more clear to me. the manual only shows how to enter data.

Anyway - the big test, its got to navigate me to Conwy (Wales) from my house ((100 miles) on hoilday for the week  ) and i will see if ive set it correctly, i think i have, as it is showing the destination in the correct place  , so we will see. everything's crossed! :(

Thanks HJT, and others

Anyway, i did the 100 mile trip, and it was spot on, fantastic.

Great aren't they? I wouldn't be without mine. Took me a while to trust it, a couple of times I thought "thats not right, it's the other way" and Tomtom proved to be right.

They can't beat local knowledge though but if you have local knowledge you don't need sat nav.

well, the main reason i bought it, is to make caravanning, and going to places, a better experience, because, if we ever get lost (which we often do), it means more stress, arguing, and more time travelling - which is a bad thing - but with sat nav, you don't get lost, wife does not need to navigate, much better.

This reminds me - i want to do a new avatar.

For a year now i'm using tomtom on my pda in the car. Recently bought a 1gb sd-card and downloaded all of europe maps on it and it works fantastic! PoI's (fuel stations mainly) are an added bonus, especially on the continent when on holiday. On post codes my tomtom can onlyuse the first part (like SL2 9 rather than SL2 9DL) which is a pity.

Bonus is that the pda can be used in daily life for email, photo's etc.

Looked at the 'dedicated units' but in the sum they were more expensive and have smaller screens. Must admit they look cool thought!

cheers,

I would hold on if your going for Tomtom, as they are bringing out version 5 any day now and won't do a free upgrade for anyone. Galaxychap, that is a very basic cutdown PDA which is fine just for running Tomtom but it won't do a lot more.

I got Tomtom 3 + a Dell Axim X5 new for

this satnav is just magic, i went to my mother-in-laws today, with the family, to go and see cosford air show. on the way there i timed it, and measured the miles, and it took 45 Mins, going there we always have done. then after the show, i used the satnav to get us home, (to see what variation there was), and it took us a completely different way, hadn

oh yeah, the show was good, the weather let it down, as the RED ARROWS, could not do most of the stunts, but i did see the harrier, and the Typhoon, which i had never seen before. and ive got to tell you, the roar from the engines is phenomenal, accelerates from 200mph to 500mph, while climbing vertically upward, in 2 seconds. it was ear piercing, ground shaking stuff, it was the loudest thing ive ever heard, you could feel your eardrums vibrating - that

 i've got the vdo hard wired ms5400 with a 7" screen and its spot on

they even send out the full mapping as and when it comes available

it has a pucka poi list and the speed camera points are a bonus the down side is that they charge a subsription system but you only pay for what you want through there ciq network but i've found it faultless B)

never got lost once while on holiday save time on all visits to zoos and other stuff that kept the kids quiet so add bonus there :D

Have no trouble with getting a signal in both my vehicles, VW T5 and Galaxy, in the Galaxy I have it mounted at the same height and to the left of the rear view mirror, that way it's in your eye line, gets a clear view of the sky and is easily heard  If you can go for the 500 it's a better choice as you get a built in hands free kit  ideal if you have two phones and only one pukker hands free kit :(
