With the climate control on AUTO the unit makes a click, click noise every so often. I'm guessing its as the unit switches from cooled air to normal air to maintain the inside temperature. The noise isn't loud, just sounds like a light switch going on/off.

It's not annoying, I'm just curious

(The cooled air is fine - very cool - unit is working well)

Anyone got any ideas.

Cooled air to normal air temperature will be regulated by the heater valve. The clicks are probably the air dictribution flaps being moved - to direct air to screen, face vents or feet as required by the system.

It could simply be the compressor electric clutch cycling. Do you feel or hear any extra load on the engine when you hear the click? If you do then this is the cause of the noise. It is quite normal so long as it is not every few seconds (say less than 10 secs), this can mean a lack, or in some cases an overfill of refrigerant gas. You say yours is very cool however - this is a good sign of a healthy system. Have a look at my website for some more info.www.cooconditioning.com

Whilst idle at the traffic lights, the clickclick is accompanied by a decrease and then upward correction in revs.

Sounds normal, previous cars used to do the same. Its just the clickclick noise I haven't really heard before.

"The Compressor Electric clutch cycling". :( Sounds great !

I get a 'click click' from the centre console when my air con is on. but I have a zetec with manual A/C (ie no climate control) - any suggestions?

Furthermore, I swear at times the air is just mildly cold but at others, it has that classic chill and smell of refrigerated air - any views?
