Guest coliff Posted May 19, 2005 Report Posted May 19, 2005 Hi,My 97 Galaxy 2.0 manual has developed a gearchange problem. When it comes to changing down the gears 5,4,3,2,1 the car simply refuses to engage the gear, instead, when i press the clutch and try to engage the gear i am met with a grinding sound and resistance. If i drop the car into neutral and coast to a stop, i can then engage first gear. Incidentally, it seems happy going up the gears 1,2,3,4,5. The car is going into the garage tommorrow but wondered if anyone had any ideas what may be the problem. Does the galaxy have clutch cables which are prone to stretching ? Could the clutch be worn or warped ? Who know........ Quote
johnb80 Posted May 19, 2005 Report Posted May 19, 2005 Does it go down the gears if you rev the engine up a bit i.e. to the sort of revs it will be doing when the clutch comes up in the gear youre trying to select. If it does it sounds a lot like clutch drag. Regards - John Quote
Guest coliff Posted May 19, 2005 Report Posted May 19, 2005 Funny you should mention giving i some revs before trying a gearchange because this also helped to get it in gear albeit spasmodically. I was in Norfolk today when the problem became noticable and i managed to limp back to Leicester via the dual carriageways and motorways to avoid gearchanges. Quote
johnb80 Posted May 19, 2005 Report Posted May 19, 2005 When the clutch is pressed down it's still transmitting some drive to the gearbox. Usually caused by oil getting onto the clutch plates, bearing in the flywheel, actuating mechanism problem (bent arms, hydraulics, cable stretched etc) or out of adjustment clutch. Quote
tim-spam Posted May 20, 2005 Report Posted May 20, 2005 Almost certainly clutch drag (incomplete disengagement). This could be caused by oil, distortion of the clutch components or flywheel (have you overheated the clutch recently?), damaged release mechanism or a clutch hydraulic problem.Tim Quote
Guest V6 Owner (George) Posted May 20, 2005 Report Posted May 20, 2005 It could be the control arms for each gear, i know i had this problem on a much older manual Ford Galaxy it didn't like changing up or down the gears, i had to fight it into gear and most of the time i won but in the end, the car won, and when it did it was sorry cause i sold her. Guest coliff Posted May 21, 2005 Report Posted May 21, 2005 Well, it turned out to be a warped clutch / clutch drag so 10/10 if you got it right...just had a genuine ford clutch ( Quote
