I know there are loads of threads on tyres, but I have steel wheels with 195/60 R16 H tyres that are coming to the end of their useful life. Having started to look around it seems that this is not a particularly common tyre size. I have managed to find the Dunlop 2020's (as originally fitted, and having only lasted 18k I'm not too keen to buy again); a Continental Vanco van tyre; a Uniroyal; and a really budget bargain basement make. And that is it. All except the bagain basement one are around the same price locally. Have also looked through the websites of the other major maufacturers - Michelin, Pirelli, Goodyear etc. and they just don't seem to manufacture them in that size. So my questions are:

1. Anyone else had this problem or am i just looking in the wrong places?

2. Anyone had any experience of the Conti Vanco tyres on a Gal?

3. Has Dunlop cooked up a deal with Ford to ensure future sales of their quirky-sized tyre?

Any thoughts or suggestions gratefully received.

PS - off to France fairly soon, is it worth buying tyres over there?

...of course they are not Dunlop 2020's but SP200's. D'oh.

Don't forget that the tyres are all that enables your Galaxy to grip the road. Higher tyre wear on "newer" tyres is because of the enhanced grip that they offer over tyres from the 1990's, 1980's and earlier. Personally I would only buy "reputable brands"; the Dunlops sem to wear faster than Contis or Michelins but then Michelins in particular appear expensive and are often hard to find at a discount.

While we're on tyres.

Fronts are down to 2.4 & rears 4.0. I reckon I'll change all four in one go.

I have always used the the Conti CH90 205/60 15" reinforced on my Alhambra & have been pleased with the performance. I am able to get them for

Check out www.mytyres.co.uk

They seem to have a selection of tyres of the size you want. I've not used them personally but they were recommended by a friend. My Sharan has 15" steel wheels, with 205/65 tyres. I've currently got a set of reinforced Goodyears on the front which I paid

Sorry scratch that last posts website link - I hadn't ticked the 'reinforced' option in the tyre selection, doing so shows they have nothing. Sorry! :)

Thanks for replies. This seems to be confirming what i thought, that 195/60 16 is a rare size.

I'm edging towards the Continental Vancos at the moment for the reasons Ivor has mentioned. I never skimp on tyres and I'm not happy with the rate of wear on the current Dunlops.

Dunlops at the front went at 19.5K miles - still legal but not much left in them.

Went for Bridgestones in the end. Near as dammit

I have conti vanco's on my LWB T4 Transporter, they are rock hard and last ages, even with a 1.5 tonne payload!

HOWEVER you will NOT get the grip and handling worthy of the best handling MPV on the market, so don't do it (wet braking is crap too).

Get CH90's, they last really well but are dear.

BTW I thought the standard 16 inch tyre for shalaxy's was 215/55/16, these are plentiful and fairly priced.

Well my tyres are definitely 195/60 16's. Everywhere I went locally pricing new tyres up said "are you sure?" when I quoted the size. Some places had no stock of that size, some a very limited stock - ie. the Dunlops. The place who fitted them in the end had to order in the Bridgestones. A rare size, and a very limited choice available.

Isn't there anyone else out there with a Gal running on 195/60 16's or is mine unique? :(

BTW, bought it new, so there hasn't been a previous owner who has fitted dodgy sized wheels/tyres.

Check with your tyre depot, but I think you'll find that 215/55 16" will fit your rims no problem...

Aye they will, but he has ordered/bought the others!

:( Did I blink? :(

wtfwozheaskingusforthen?  :o

Just bringing my little tale up to date. Plus some curiosity over the fact that no-one else out there is admitting to having the same size tyres as mine fitted to their gal. I just find it hard to believe that nobody else has encountered the same difficulty.

Thanks seatkid for the info on fitting an alternative tyre on the same rim. I can never quite manage to do the maths - so would 215/55 16 have the same overall diameter as 195/65 16? And would it involve changing all four corners at the same time?

Thanks guys.

I thought they were 195/60/16?

If so the variation in overall diameter would be only 1.5 mm compared to 215/55/16....no difference at all really.

So if you were going to replace all four then you would have a much wider choice with 215/55/16.

Thassall :o suit yourself sir.

The tyre wall is expressed as a percentage of the tread width.

60% of 195mm = (195/100)*60= 117mm

55% of 205mm = (205/100)*65= 112mm

But how does it effect the rolling radius of the wheels is the main thing.

A change to a 205 width and a 55% tyre wall will decrease your rolling radius by 8mm and when your speed is displayed as 70 mph you will actually be traveling at 69.43 mph

You must have tyres of the same size and width on the same axle. So they would have to be changed in pairs.
