Guest puddled Posted May 15, 2005 Report Posted May 15, 2005 Was out on the motorway today, and noticed that a sort of grating sound seemed to be coming from the front N/S wheel. Got home, and jacked up front end of car to check for bearing play / cv joints, and noticed that the sound is actually coming from the center of the car. If you spin the wheel in neutral, the wheel and bearing sound fine, but there is a definate grating noise coming from centre where the driveshafts meet the transfer box. This noise happens when you spin either of the front wheels, and when the wheel stops, it carries on for a while then stops. The car is 2.8 VR6 with tiptronic. Has anyone had this before, or can you advise what I could be looking at. Many thanks Quote
Guest Mercwarrantyman Posted September 29, 2005 Report Posted September 29, 2005 Hello , this is the same engine & box as fitted to mercedes v-class vans and people carriers(v280). Had loads of these and all ended up with new gearbox - burnt out clutches etc , also had a few diffs and diff bearing failures & no repair procedures are available to my knowledge. maybe vw can shed some light ? Guest vr6galaxy Posted September 29, 2005 Report Posted September 29, 2005 It is indeed :D MERCEDES V 280 104.900 CC 2792 98-> about time Merc got a decent engine :D all they need now is a decent interior lay out and driveing position in the sprinter  Quote
Guest marcusheawood Posted September 29, 2005 Report Posted September 29, 2005 ...it's not a good gearbox that, sounds like premature diff problems. An independant auto gearbox specialist may be able to repair it though, I'd stay away from the stealer if I were you unless you have a warranty. Quote
