Today I locked the car via the door lock (No remote fitted to my 2.3 zetec) as normal, although I have noticed recently the lock felt a little rough when turning the key.

When I went to unlock the car again with drivers side door lock, the barrel was offering no resistance as if nothing was connected to it inside the door and of course the car wouldnt unlock.

Tail gate and passenger locks all work ok. So took drivers door card off and heard something fall to bottom of the door inside. I found what appears to be part of the door lock, it was semi circular and appeared to be made of cast alloy.

Anyway it seems I'll have to get a new lock fitted, are these mega bucks to buy? Also it seems very tight to try and get your hands inside to work on the lock etc so seems best left to the experts (or Ford mechanic at least  ).

Has anyone else had this go wrong are am I just a one off?????

Hi Steve, I have exactly the same problem and was about to tackle it soon. I was going to look at swapping the passenger and drivers door locks over as I never use the passenger side to unlock the car. I don't know if this is possible but sure will save some dosh if it is.

Let me know how you get on getting the lock off if you do it first.

Greg.

I've just had exactly the same thing happen to my drivers door. However, my electric windows are also affected (I can wind them down from the switches but have to get them back up again by locking the passenger door - a major pain in the rain yesterday).

Like you, I'm relatively handy but fear that the available space to work is too tight for my chubby little grubbers.

Please update this query when/if you have any success.

I'll do the same if I make any cheap progress (if it's going to be

IIRC there is a screw in the side of the door body which will release the whole handle and lock mechanism and the repair is very simple the parts are available as seperate items, the round circular type casting is the global close actuator that mounts on the backof the lock barrel.

Its an easy repair and you should be able to retain the original keys.

I had the same problem and it appears its cause is the use of lock de-icer which dries out the barrel and causes the casting to jam and eventually break off.

This should not affect the use of the window closing from inside the car unless the lock broke with the actuator in the down position (unlikely as its sprung return).

So you may have caused a wire to become detached when the lock actuator broke.

That semi circular bit is half of the actuator. They do just break. No big deal and a new one is only a couple of quid <_<

Make sure you get the right one as they changed in 98? or there about. The best bet is to take the bit you have as they are very slightly different circumferences. (The new one is the smaller)

It'll be as good as new with no key changes or anything.

The locksmith never turned up!!

So next week I'm having the car serviced so the garage have said they will sort barrel out for me. Strange about use of de-icer in lock because when we had the snow a few months ago the drivers lock seemed to be permantly frozen solid. I used the tailgate to open / lock car.

As for the windows, if I forget about lock and go to unlock the drivers doors the car wont un-lock but the windows will go down and not go back up via the window switches. They'll only go up if you lock the car again, also the car wont lock from the inside

I found that by playing with the key in the lock it does then cure the window problem again.

Thanks for info though :)

It will affect the windows, as written about earlier.

Mine is finally being done today. It should of been done yesterday but the handle was out of stock so they had to order one in ( why they didnt order it in earlier I dont know).

I'm also having new front disc / pads fitted as well as a full service

Appologies for not replying sooner -

In my car, the lock itself was broken. There is a small 'paddle- like' bit of metal that sticks out of the back of the barrel into the door locking mechanism - that had broken off.

Removal of the lock, door handle and wiring is simple (anyone who wants more detail - let me know).

I had to buy a new door handle which includes a new lock & set of keys.

The dealer told me that I would have to have a new separate key for the drivers door. If I wanted a single key for the car, this would require a whole lock change for the car costing

Don't know about the Galaxy but on my Golf the "paddle" bit could be replaced and cost about

My new handle did include the new barrell and I still only need one key for all locks.

Just got back from France, car actually ran faultless :( which I'm amazed at. Travelled from Sete to Calais (700miles) min 10hrs, that included getting lost in Lyon as the tunnel there was shut so I ended up in a underground car park ;) .
