Guest j_mchattie Posted May 12, 2005 Report Posted May 12, 2005 I havent driven my car for a week for various reasons. And on trying to start, the engine fired up but then died after a fraction of a second. To be expected every so often. So i waited 30 seconds (as if my new 610 amp battery needed the rest), and turned the key. It sounded like i had no compression (which isnt true), the engine was rapidly turning over, but not firing. It started when i gave it 50% throttle and held the key (but it took a while). The revs were low but eventually picked up to idle. Its happened before, one time i had to push start it because i wasted the battery trying to start it. The push-start worked. It will only happen if i try and start the car, and it fails on the first go - you then know that it will be a mare to start on second go. It can also be difficult to restart after running for a few minutes. Anyone know why? Thanks www.jimmycricket.com Quote
sad_git Posted May 12, 2005 Report Posted May 12, 2005 Used to service a fleet of mondeos, this fault is usually a loss of compression due to the hydraulic lifters jacking themselves up and holding the valves slightly open.Try an oil and filter change, but you must flush the engine thoroughly. Use a good quality engine flush added to the oil before changing, they usually say run the engine at fast idle for 10 to 20 mins. Put the flush in and drive the car at fairly high revs for about half an hour before changing the oil and filter. You must use a semi synthetic 5w30 oil, anything else could cause the trouble you're having. Best of luck! Quote
